This work is a three-part composition based on the Latin words meaning Strength, Skill, and Character. The piece opens with a poignant fanfare depicting the strength of the modern concert band, which is followed by a fast-paced section, meant to demonstrate the performers' skills. The third section of the work is an uplifting theme designed to depict character. After moving back to the skill theme in a new key, it builds to a dramatic climax, followed by a short coda that bursts to the finish. Ideal for concert or contest.

Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

This work was originally written for brass band (see there). At the composer's request, his former pupil Marcel Wengler wrote an arrangement for Symphonie wind band, which is equal to the original in ever-yway. Here Henze and Wengler have given wind players a work which successfully combines a popular style and to some extent extremely witty elements with the resources of new music. It is excellent concert music for advanced and Professional orchestras.Hans Werner Henze belongs to a small circle of internationally known cornposers of serious contemporary music. In his operas, symphonies, and music for ensembles and chamber music groups, as well as in his contributions to music for amateurs, there are works with a distinctive sense of form, delicate tonality and rhythmic variety which nonetheless never lose sight of that dimension of humanity.Marcel Wengler (born 1946) is now a freelance composer. Liszt composed three piano works on Paganini's bell theme. The best known of these works is La Campanella (1851). The Clochette fantasia, that is the Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur la Clochette de Paganini (1831-1834) as well as the early version of the F sharp minor study, the Campanella (1838) in A flat minor are much less played. Liszt composed a fourth piano work on the campanelle theme. Similar to the preceding it is a series of variations. The second theme is also taken from Paganini: it is the theme of a variation series known with the title The Carnival in Venice.

Das Konzertwerk Spirit of Life wurde vom belgischen Komponisten Johan Nijs geschrieben.

In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan’s twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, “Soli Deo Gloria†(Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Saëns organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond.Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from ‘Jan de Haan’ and ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Saëns’ theme.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed this small series of variations without opus number (now cataloged as WoO 64) in the years between 1790 and 1792, shortly before his moving from Bonn to Vienna, when he was still working for the von Breuning family and taking lessons from Christian Gottlob Neefe. The manuscript of this composition is unusually clean and without errors and does not show the indication for harp, which instead appears in the first print, published in Bonn in 1798 by Simrock. It is not known exactly if their destination for the harp was in Beethoven’s intentions from the beginning or if it was an initiative of the publisher that he eventually approved. These Variations are based on the theme of the Swiss song Es hätt ‘and’ Buur e ‘Töchterli, attested in the collections of popular songs since 1781, which tells the story of a pastoral love between the young Dursli and Babeli.
