Johann Matthias Sperger, no doubt the leading double bass player of his time, was born on 23 March 1750 in the Lower Austrian town of Feldsberg (today Valtice, Czech Republic). After studying in Vienna and occupying various posts in Pressburg and Eberau, he was hired by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin for the Duke's court ensemble in Ludwigslust. There Sperger died on 13 May 1812, a highly esteemed man. His extensive compositional oeuvre (which includes 45 symphonies, chamher works, church music and concertos) found its climax in his works for double bass solo. His 18 concertos, sonatas and chamber works for various instrumental comhinations off er the soloist gratifying musical tasks both from a musical as well as a technical point of view. The Adagio for Double Bass and String Quartet was composed around 1796/97, no doubt for the composer's own use. The autograph belongs to the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (class. no. Mus. 5179). The work is based on thematic material from the second movement of Anton Franz Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 3. The relationship between the two works and the mutual influence of both composers is plainly visible. In order to allow a performance of this charming little work without a string quartet, we are also offering a version with piano accompaniment (DVfM 8109) as well. Since the original solo part was written for a double bass tuned in thirds and a fourth (Viennese tuning: A-D-F sharp-A), it was necessary to arrange the enclosed for the solo tuning customary today: F sharp-B-E-A. The editor and publisher wish to thank the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for its permission to print this first edition. Klaus Trumpf, Munich, Spring 1997 Klaus TrumpfSperger, musician at the Mecklenburg court in Ludwigslust, achieved fame above all with his works for double bass. Thematically, the A major Adagio closely recalls Anton Franz Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 3.

The anniversary edition for all choirs! With their extensive forces and complex parts, the performance of Beethoven's choral-symphonic works is hugely demanding for many choirs. For the major Beethoven anniversary in 2020 Carus is therefore expanding the repertoire of works available for mixed choirs. The Choral Collection Beethoven (ed. Jan Schumacher) contains especially attractive arrangements of Beethoven's music from three centuries. Contents include the choral-symphonic repertoire in versions with piano accompaniment, some lesser-known unaccompanied works, and some seldom-performed works, such as pieces from his incidental music. During his lifetime Beethoven was so admired that contemporaries arranged his music - mainly the well-known instrumental works - for chorus. Some of these choral works were even performed at Beethoven's own funeral. Subsequent generations of composers have also immersed themselves in Beethoven's output. In addition, for the anniversary Carus has commissioned choral arrangements of Beethoven's works from several contemporary composers. The Choral Collection Beethoven contains around 40 secular and sacred choral movements in a wide range of styles. Editor Jan Schumacher has created an indispensable resource with the Beethoven Choral Collection, particularly for amateur choirs, but the edition is also suitable for vocal ensembles and chamber choirs. Guaranteed enjoyment of Beethoven's music well beyond the anniversary year. * 41 choral settings for SATB, some with piano accompaniment * well within the capabilities of amateur choirs * suitable for concerts, church services, and many social occasions * also contains arrangements of Beethoven's vocal and instrumental works from three centuries, by composers including Gottlieb Benedict Bierey, Heribert Breuer, Peter Cornelius, Gunnar Eriksson, Gunther Martin Gottsche, Clytus Gottwald, John Hoybye, Hans Georg Nageli, Peter Schindler, Ignaz Ritter von Seyfried, Friedrich Silcher, and many others * CD with selected works included with the conductor's score (Deutscher Jugendkammerchor, conducted by Florian Benfer) * economical choral edition (editionchor) available Contents (selection) * Choruses and canons: Auld Lang Syne, Gluck zum neuen Jahr, and Das Reden / Schweigen and many more. * Historic arrangements for chorus, including from the Moonlight Sonata, the Appassionata, the 7th Symphony, and many other works. * New arrangements for chorus, including the songs Bitten, Ich liebe dich, Marmotte, and many others. * Arrangements for chorus and piano, including the choral movements from the Choral Fantasia, the oratorio Christus am Olberge and the incidental music Die Ruinen von Athen, and the finale of the 9th Symphony.

In his novel Of Love and Other Demons, Gabriel Garcia Marquez mentions Domenico Scarlatti as a music teacher. I was so delighted with this idea that I played through all his 555 sonatas. I could not get his sensitive and dramatic music out of my mind. I selected some passages and incorporated them in an aria of my opera. Hommage a Domenico Scarlatti is an arrangement of this aria in which the vocal tenor part is performed by a horn solo. Peter Eotvos.

Jules Mouquet (1867-1946) was a French composer, music professor, and arts advocate. He graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under Xavier Leroux and Théodore Dubois. The majority of his catalogue remains obscure and is rarely heard today. The notable exception is Flûte de Pan, Op. 15 (1906) originally for flute and orchestra and later arranged by Mouquet into a sonata for flute and piano.

Four movements, top part advanced. Several recordings and many broadcasts. Duration c.13'.Programme Notes:The Swiss composer Joseph Lauber was born at Ruswil near Lucerne in 1864. After studying with Heger in Zürich and Rheinberger in Munich, Lauber worked with Diémer and Massenet in Paris. With Massenet he learnt a great deal about orchestration, a subject that he subsequently taught until the end of his life at the Geneva conservatoire as well as piano and composition. He died in 1952.Lauber's 193 catalogued works are many and varied. He wrote for all instruments and in every genre except oratorio and opera. Among his output areseveral works for double bass, most written for Prof. Hans Fryba, a personal friend with whom he worked as a double bass and piano recital duo. Fryba was one of the leading players in Europe in his day and was principal of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. First was Theme and Variations (1936-7) and a Rhapsodie with orchestra (1937). Three Walzes followed in 1939, a Gavotte and Gigue, a Sonata and then in 1943 Fantasie de Concert, written for the Geneva Competition. Four Caprices appeared in 1942, the same date as the Quartet for double basses which was dedicated to Fryba and written for the Berlin Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet, one of the first ever such ensembles to exist. The Quartet for double basses was revived by Klaus Stoll in the 1970s for the Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet at that time to play. It was subsequently published in 1975 by Yorke Edition by kind permission of the composer's son Edmund Lauber. Rodney Slatford 2004

A sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and music director Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772-1840) orchestrated the first movement of the famous Moonlight Sonata' by Beethoven (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin mass. The result is as astounding as it is harmonious! Versions for choir and organ, and choir and piano (both like the original version in C sharp minor) are also available (Carus 28.009/45 and in 28.009/03). Score available separately - see item CA.2800900.

The date of composition of the cantata Lobe den Herren, meine Seele can only be conjectured. However, several indications suggest an early composition, possibly during Kuhnau's stay in Zittau. The work is one of only two known cantatas by Kuhnau in which cornetti are scored - the second work is the cantata Christ lag in Todes-Banden (PB 32034) -, even so in combination with three trombones as an early baroque wind section. In addition, the musical texture of the introductory Sonata can certainly be understood as a reminiscence of the polychorality known from the Renaissance and early Baroque as well as their connection with the basso continuo era, since four strings and bassoon on the one side and five wind instruments on the other side face each other over a continuous continuo part. The text of the cantata is a selection of a few verses from Psalm 103. This is the larger scored cantata with this textual basis; parallel to it exists a smaller scored one for alto, bass, violin, oboe d'amore and continuo.
