Unparalleled in scope, this groundbreaking series for E_Alto and B_Tenor offers a single collection of Repertoire and supporting materials written or arranged specifically for saxophone. With Repertoire spanning from the Baroque to contemporary eras, Recordings, Etudes, Technique, and Orchestral Excerpts, this comprehensive series serves as a balanced and organized pedagogical resource from the beginner to advanced levels of study. Nine progressive volumes of Repertoire expose students to original works and arrangements of diverse styles from W.A. Mozart to Violet Archer, with selected works by notable jazz artist Paul Desmon (Take Five), and living composer Phil Woods. Each level provides opportunities to explore Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary works, with original, unaccompanied selections from Levels 5 through 8 that use extended techniques such as multiphonics, key clicks, and bisbigliando. Earlier works pre-dating the origin of the saxophone have been carefully arranged with consideration of the unique quality of the instrument. Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012.

The Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) is committed to cultivating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in the international guitar community and in the repertoire published for the instrument. Many factors, including a composer's race, gender, and sexual orientation, have historically created a narrow representation of our community in the classical music canon. For this first volume of the GFA Spotlight Series, the GFA commissioned seven new works by composers of color. The second volume of this series will follow with seven transcriptions of existing pieces by composers of color. These commissioned pieces and transcriptions were premiered by students in the GFA Mentorship Program in 2021.With this collection, the guitar takes a step towards a more inclusive and representative repertoire that nurtures creativity and inclusion for generations of guitarists to come. Growing the canon enriches the musical experiences of our entire international guitar community through exposure to diverse perspectives and voices, complementing the invaluable lessons we learn from the existing contributions of pieces that form the canon.

His triptych for guitar quartet takes as inspiration the trilogy of gods of Memphis in ancient Egypt. The work is a poetic journey through the mythological landscapes of their world around 3000 BC. Sakkara is a plateau south of Cairo, where an ideal space for a culture of the afterlife developed, through tombs and the construction of the first pyramids. To this contributed the fundamental role of Imhotep, the great architect in the III Dynasty from the Sakkara area, who was almost a god in his time and most likely responsible for the stepped pyramid of Djoser. The trilogy is formed by the couple Ptah and Sekhmet, and Nefertem, their son. Ptah is the patron of artists, and at the same time the god for measuring time. Sekhmet was the wife and sister of Ptah, goddess of war -- related to the Sun god and associated with the color red. Nefertem, son of both, was the god of fragrance, of perfume and linked to the lotus flower, the symbol of rebirth. The three movements of this composition are musical spaces created on poetic associations around this mythical world and in an area that has always fascinated me: Sakkara. The work is commissioned by the Aleph-Gitarrenquartett, which is also its dedicatee. (Jose M. Sanchez-Verdu, 2022)World premiere: Karlsruhe, ZKM, January 14, 2023 Commissioned by the Aleph-Gitarrenquartett.

That marvelous moment when two previously sung melodies first fit together is an important milestone for developing groups. And there's nothing like a well-crafted partner song arrangement to take you there. Over the years, George Strid and Mary Donnelly have set the standard for quality partner songs, and this treatment of the well-known Mexican folk tune is no exception. Sing both lines in English or teach Spanish words using the included pronunciation guide. Seriously, if you want to take steps toward harmony, follow the magic formula: A, then B, then together. ¡Ay, ay, ay, ay!
