This arrangement of I Hope In Time a Change Will Come came about through a desire to hear/play more than one chorus of this stunningly beautiful melody by Oliver Nelson. The basis for this new arrangement was Nelson's original chart, but this one is two choruses, not one. Part of the second chorus can be improvised. The soloist throughout is soprano saxophone (could be played on tenor saxophone or trumpet if you so desire). This is a slow, gorgeous ballad that will thrill your audiences. 5-4-4-3.

There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the Full Nelson album and also included in the Verve Jazz Masters collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Regular saxophone parts are also included if doubles are not available. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Sketches on Standards, this is a superb alto saxophone ballad feature, as arranged by Russo for Lee Konitz. Russo employs a dark, brooding, beautiful setting for Konitz's soaring saxophone. Included is a transcription of Lee's amazing solo. 5-5-5-3.

As commissioned (and recorded) by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany, this is an extended arrangement based on a gorgeous melody by Pat Metheny. The saxophone players double on flute (sax 1), clarinets (sax 2-4) and bass clarinet (sax 5). There is solo space for piano, tenor sax and trombone, as the chart moves from a rubato ballad, to a bossa feel, to a rock ballad feel, and back to the rubato again. This is a highly, emotionally charged piece which makes a wonderful addition to any program. Limited brass ranges. The chart also includes an interweaving of Metheny's pensive melody Tell Her You Saw Me. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

This chart is an up-tempo swing tune which just roars from beginning to end. This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has quite a bluesy feel to it while providing a nice variation to the standard blues changes that you might not expect. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this pro (original) version, you will find Oliver Nelson's amazing solo transcribed and arranged as a trumpet soli.
