The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Ensemble Collection (Volume 1) is a set of eight full arrangements that correlate with selected tracks from Jamey's play along Volumes #1 (Learning to Play Jazz), #2 (Nothin' But Blues) and #88 (Millennium Blues). Peter Blair had done all the arrangements and retained the exact form and solo structure as Jamey's recordings, so your students will be able to practice all the solos from these charts using Jamey's play along tracks! The eight pieces in the collection are in contrasting styles, including modal blues, Latin grooves, 3/4 minor blues and more! The Conductor's Score includes a CD with full recordings of all the charts and the rhythm section parts are fully notated.

This is a lovely, straight-eighth waltz that starts simply and quietly with the rhythm section. There are flute doubles in the alto saxophone parts and a flugelhorn solo. Brass ranges are very limited. This is a great piece to program to contrast the more demanding charts you are performing. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on the new CD The Bill Holman Band Live, Holman has written a witty, musical, fun-filled feature for baritone saxophone. Lots of space for creative playing, and the wonderful contrapuntal writing that we come to expect from Holman. It's time to feature the foundation of your jazz band. A moderate tempo shuffle-feel makes this one swing like crazy! 5-4-4-4.

This is surely one of Gershwin's most beautiful melodies, and Potts arranged it to feature trumpet throughout (as recorded on the 1959 album The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess, featuring the Bill Potts Big Band) . Lush orchestration, rich harmonies, reasonable ranges and a touching ending make this chart a great choice for festival programming. This should be in every big band book. 5-5-5-4.
