This setting of the march from Grieg's Lyric Suite is a charming and colorful work in ABA form. Delicate at the beginning, it develops the lyric melody, then the march builds with intensity to a dramatic conclusion. Rewarding and musical! (3:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, op. 17.1.Cow Keeper's Song 2.Wedding March.

Along with the movement In the King’s Hall, The Homage March from Act III of Sigurd Jorsalfar remains one of the most popular Scandinavian pieces of classical music. This arrangement has, once again, has been skilfully crafted by Wil van der Beek for a younger Concert Band and will be a popular addition to any concert.

Sarabande and Gavotte are the second and third movements of the Holberg Suite, Op. 40, a standard movement of the Baroque suite. Both movements may be performed as part of the entire suite or as a stand-alone selection. This arrangement is true to the original work---as feasible and offers the sonorities of the concert band ensemble in a very playable version. The first movement, Praeludium, (00-38363) released last season, has recently been selected as Reviewer's Choice in the October 2012 issue of The Instrumentalist magazine. Based on the German fairy tale made popular by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, this piece is a musical depiction of the short story Rumpelstiltskin. In addition to the original music in this work, the composer tips his musical hat with excerpts from Grieg's Morning Mood, Wagner's Bridal Chorus, and Brahms' Lullaby. A delightful setting with several style and tempo changes that will capture the imagination of one and all! (2:45).

This exciting study in accelerando and crescendo demands playing in a clearly articulated style with passion and intensity. From the pianissimo of the opening measures to the triple forte of the final note, an ever-increasing surge of sound is necessary. Suggested metronome markings are given at key intervals throughout, and ample cues are provided to strengthen vital lines played by bassoons (2), oboes (2), and F horns (4). Duration ca. 2:30.
