This tune has a comfortable tempo, easy ranges, well-balanced ensemble chorus and a very handsome harmonic structure. All parts are interesting and contribute to the whole picture. Trumpet, alto sax and piano have written solos, and the bass part is completely written out. In maintaining a jazz feel, eighth notes should not be played strictly, but must have a lazy feel (when playing two in succession, the second one is delayed). Although dynamics, tempo and sound are important, the feel of the jazz idiom is the top priority. Much care has been taken in the construction of this arrangement to meet this goal.

Commissioned by the New York University Jazz Ensemble, this medium uptempo foray with abstract overtones features solos by tenor and piano. The opening unison brass soli, joined by saxophone counterpoint, leads to an energetic exchange between the sections, followed by the tenor sax solo over contemporary harmonies. After exciting exchanges between soloist and ensemble, the band takes over with an intense interlude leading to a piano solo over more traditional changes. The final shout chorus brings the band to its peak, leading to a final vamp that slowly builds to a powerful finish. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 9:15.

Originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music, however Basie never made the record, instead suggesting that Thad start his own band. Low Down still maintains that swinging Basie mindset and is a 32- measure AABA form. Its basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful rhythm section with a driving ride cymbal beat and crisp hi-hat, underpinning saxes and brass that are tight, and always on the back of the beat.
