Some of the most exuberant music from the Baroque period comes to us from George Frideric Handel, composer of Messiah, among many other masterpieces. Handel's Allegro from Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1, arranged by Deborah Baker Monday, is a perfect example of his most joyous music and is an excellent choice for concert or festival. The four-measure melodic theme in G major occurs throughout the piece and is passed among all instruments. A half step figure is also a common motive with easily accessible fingerings provided. This piece features simple quarter and eighth-note rhythms. The accompanying parts are interrelated, and rhythmic independence is limited. (2:00) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Jacob vs. Angel is a piece about crisis of conscience, ambiguity, and misinterpretation expressed through the depiction of a major battle, the goal of which is never made entirely clear. Based on the biblical story, the work is highly programmatic, with each of the six movements reflecting a corresponding stanza from the titular poem by Alice Weaver Flaherty. The piece was originally composed as a vehicle for virtuoso organist Heinrich Christensen, and later orchestrated. The first movement introduces the main musical material--a five note motive, the intervals of which are reorganized to create melodic and harmonic development throughout the piece. The second, third, and fourth movements depict the brutal fight between Jacob and the angel, and lead one to the next without pause. The fifth movement is about the post-battle scene, and the final movement is an epilogue, reframing the ideas from the previous movements. The music elucidates various actions from the Flaherty poem—sand skittering across the desert, aggressive acts of violence and sensuality between the protagonists, the beating of wings, feathers blowing in the wind, etc. But beyond the music's more literal elements, the work is designed to express an abstract state of mind, a sense of unease, and anticipation of what is yet to come. —Graham Gordon Ramsay2(2) 1,1 2 2; 2221; 7perc, hp, cel; stgs Duration: 24'Composed: 2023 Published by: Distributed Composer Jacob vs Angel was composed originally as a solo concert organ work in 2007; the orchestral version was completed in 2023. Water!

The Blumine movement included in the original five-movement version of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 was long considered lost. Composed as early as 1884 for a theater piece, Mahler inserted it into the symphony as its second movement in 1888. After three performances, he turned his back on this Love Episode, calling the sentimental, gushing movement a youthful folly, and removed it. Mahler's Hamburg autograph score was only rediscovered in 1966. Benjamin Britten gave the Blumine movement a new hearing at the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival. The critical new edition is based for the first time on the autograph score, together with the meanwhile rediscovered score copy with Mahler's last revisions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.First edition based on the copy of the score revised by Mahler Hamburg 1893.

Alasdroim (Pronounced Ah-lass-DRIMM) is a composition that draws upon two ancient Irish Gaelic folk songs. The songs are titled: Gol Na mBan San Ar (The crying of the women at the slaughter) and Mairseail Alasdroim (MacAllistrum's march). In 1647 at Knockinoss in the county of Cork, 4,000 Irishmen under the leadership of Alasdor MacDonnell went into battle with the forces of the British Lord Inchiquin. All of the Irish forces perished. The first of these two Gaelic folk songs is about the battle at Knockinoss. The second song was written for the funeral procession of Alasdor MacDonnell. The title, Alasdroim, is the Gaelic word for MacAllistrum. Alasdroim was composed for the 1996 Music Educators National Conference.

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.Le format permet une lisibilite parfaite; le materiel a ete realise en tenant compte des conseils des bibliothecaires de grands orchestres. Of all his symphonies, Mahler gave the Fourth, his favorite and problem child, his most particular attention. The Heavenly Life, a humoresque composed in 1892 for soprano and piano, which he already wanted to use in the final movement of the Third Symphony under the title What the Child Tells Me, ultimately became the nucleus and final movement of the Fourth. Even after publication in 1901, Mahler kept repeatedly refining the orchestration. His maxim not without my retouching led to a whole series of revised reprints. It is probably no coincidence that Mahler performed especially the Fourth Symphony in his last two New York concerts in February 1911, using this opportunity to review once again the score and parts. This performance material with his retouching served as the main source for the new edition. Furthermore, included for the first time were corrections and annotations in conjunction with performances of the Fourth, which Mahler entered into the scores of conductors such as Mengelberg and Wickenhauser. PB 5664 has been awarded the Presto Sheet Music Award 2020.

The Song of the Earth, composed in the summer of 1908, is Mahler's best-known and most personal work. Reflecting drastic changes in his life, its immense emotional density is very moving. Until the very end, Mahler continued to refine the extremely differentiated instrumentation, as is evident in numerous retouchings in the autograph score and engraver's model. It is therefore all the more regrettable that he was neither able to perform his Symphony in Songs himself nor that he was involved in its printing. Unfortunately, in the posthumously published first edition of 1912 and the subsequent editions edited by Erwin Ratz and Karl Heinz Fussl, many questions remained unanswered, while other were answered in a dubious way.The edition is the first text-critical one of the work on a scientifically sound basis. It offers not only a more reliable musical text, but also systematically and lucidly prepared information on the sources, their transmission and evaluation. All editorial decisions have been documented in a transparently comprehensible manner - in particular those leading to new audible results. Work-related notes on performance practice, which for the first time include Mahler's conducting indications, offer valuable, indispensable interpretive aids. In addition to the regular five clarinet parts, the set of parts includes two additional parts (3rd clarinet/Eb clarinet, bass clarinet/3rd clarinet in places where the latter plays Eb clarinet) to allow performances with only four clarinets. The completely revised piano reduction reproduces the orchestral texture true to the score without losing sight of playability. Both Mahler's piano autograph and the piano reduction by Woss, which was commissioned by the composer himself, served as an inspiration for this.

It was the Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concerto) in C major that won special popularity continuing a tradition which was cultivated by Corelli with his pastoral at the end of Op. 6 No. 8 or by Torelli in his Op. 8 No. 6 and reaching to the pastoral in Handel's Messiahs and to the sinfonia in the second cantata of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorium. This, finally, originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo, a genuine siciliano in the rocking, typically dotted 12/8 time.

Day of Wrath (translated from the Latin Dies Irae), with its dramatic extremes of emotion, is the perfect choice for any concert or festival. Students may recognize it from the video game Mobile Strike! This setting by Verdi in his Requiem Mass was first performed in 1874 and now has been arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Repeated sixteenth notes are used extensively along with divided parts to create a full, sonorous effect with huge dynamic contrasts from the fortissimo opening to the morendo ending. (2:05).

One of several popular dances from time of the French Renaissance, jouissance refers to a dance in which the feet stay on the floor, as opposed to one with leaps or lifts. This setting by Deborah Baker Monday has a driving pulse with attractive modal harmonies in the friendly key of E natural minor. All instruments have melodic lines. This arrangement also provides a great opportunity for teaching double up-bows and two-note slurs followed by two separate notes. The added percussion part will make this piece a great selection for festival or your next concert! (1:45).

Classical ReminiscencesDuring his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (leaving out the violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart's wind serenades. The expressive Adagio is the heart of the five-movement work. Quite untypical of Brahms, he acquired a liking for the work from the outset, still undertaking a revision scarcely 15 years after the premiere of 1860; this has now been made available in a new practical edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (JBG).

Johannes Brahms was long reluctant to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music. With his D-major Serenade in six movements, the young composer deliberately chose a genre that had had its golden era in the 18th century, thus before Beethoven. Initially, he even conceived the Serenade for a smaller setting, but decided on a full orchestra in 1860. But even then, it was slow in becoming an audience success. The new Brahms Complete Edition has chosen as its principal source a copy of the scores first edition that Brahms used as his personal work copy. There, however, errors remained undiscovered, and recurred in later print runs as well. It was not until the new Brahms Edition that a music text of the D-major Serenade is finally being published, a text that clearly heeds all of the composers emendations and eliminates other shortcomings.

Brahms composed his Triumphlied for eight-part chorus, solo baritone and orchestra as a direct reaction to the victory of the German army in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the consequent founding of the German Empire. Similar to the German Requiem completed shortly before, Brahms himself compiled the text from the Bible, in this case from Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelations. Because of the somewhat melodramatic tone of the composition and the nationalistic background to the works genesis, in recent years the Triumphlied has seldom been heard in concert halls. Unlike overly-patriotic occasional works such as Richard Wagner's Kaisermarsch, the Triumphlied is true Brahms and is a musically rich composition. This study edition takes the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition (HL 51486030), thereby representing the highest scholarly precision. The Appendix contains an exciting new discovery, a previously-unknown early version of the 1st movement in C major, which was only rediscovered in 2012 in Bremen.
