Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro is a sublime addition to the Alto Saxophone repertoire. Many of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande et Allegro, where the texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard, and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's F minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for a thoroughly enjoyable and delightful performance!”.

The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a ‘period piece’.

Simple Sarabande ist im Stil der ursprünglichen Sarabande, einem würdevollen höfischen Tanz aus dem 17. Jahrhundert im 3/4-Takt, geschrieben, wenn auch Philip Sparke für seine Komposition einen etwas moderneren harmonischen Ausdruck wählte. Einfachheit und leichte fließende Bewegungen sind die Schlüsselworte in diesem Stück, in dem Ihr Blasorchester sich ganz auf die Schönheit von Ton und Phrasierung konzentrieren kann.

La sarabande est une danse au caractère digne, sur un rythme ternaire lent, dont l’origine remonte la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Très appréciée en France et en Espagne, elle conquiert rapidement l’ensemble des cours européennes. La sarabande s’intègre alors dans la musique instrumentale et devient un mouvement fondamental de la suite de danses. On retrouve quelques éléments stylistiques de cette danse dans Simple Sarabande. La structure harmonique reste néanmoins plus moderne.

Jon Lord’s Sarabande was composed during 1975 and released as a solo album the following year. This new revised edition of the composer’s 2010 concert version represents the first appearance of the work in print in anyform. Lord intended it for his own use in live performance, as a companion to his celebrated Concerto for Group and Orchestra. It is a brilliant showpiece for the combined forces of rock band and orchestra, takinginspiration from the keyboard suites of J.S. Bach. This new full score is edited by Jon Lord’s long-time musical collaborator, the conductor Paul Mann, and makes use of many previously unavailable sources including themanuscriptscores of the original version and a copy of the score corrected in consultation with the composer following the 2010 premiere. It can therefore be said to represent as closely as possible Jon Lord’s final thoughts onthe work.

The Suite for guitar aims to blend tradition and modernity through the use of a language with a neobaroque imprint.
The canonical utilization of the fixed dances of the Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue preceded by an introductory Prelude) serves as a clear reference to the corresponding Baroque model characterized by alternation between slow and fast movements.
The style, on the other hand, appears to be moderately dissonant, yet still focused on a well-defined tonal framework. A personal use of both dissonances and modulations is intended to enhance the auditory experience while maintaining a strong connection to a specific tonal center (E), which serves as a stable reference point in the organization of the musical material.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for bassoon and piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950).
