In Tampere, Finland, surprisingly many, relatively young and active composers with their own distinctive voice are making their mark. This would not be possible without Jouni Kaipainen, the grand old man of the Tampere scene. He was both a lecturer at the Tampere Music Academy and the composer-in-residence for the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a true Tampere culture person an inspiration to the younger generation. Jouni's passing was a moment of deep grief for all of us in Tampere - we are left with sadness and longing. Tommi Hyytinen commissioned a sonata for horn and piano from me at around that time, so I decided to dedicate the work in Jouni's memory. The work passes through different emotions and sections within the rather wide-arched sonata form. The final movement is very much in memoriam Jouni Kaipainen. This sonata continues my project to write sonatas for each solo instrument and piano.

Vivaldi was hugely successful as a composer in his day and amassed a fortune as many of his works were published during his lifetime. His works remain popular today and the three movements in this suite, Prelude, Allemande and Corrente are taken from a sonata for strings.

The Paris horn player Louis Francois Dauprat was professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, thus having a great influence on the French school of horn playing. He wrote his compositions mostly for didactic purposes for his students. Simon Scheiwiller has revised the sonata for horn and harp op. 3 for the present edition.

Originally composed for English horn by classical composer Luigi Cherubini, this sonata translates beautifully for proficient low brass soloists. Known for his sensational dramatic flare, especially in his operas, Cherubini, like Beethoven, helped push the conventional limits of classical music into the Romantic era. Symphony No. 1 for Brass Quintet
by C. P. E. Bach, arranged by Justin Bland
C. P. E. Bach was an innovator as an early Classical era composer, helping to develop the sonata form that was refined by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Like his father, Carl Phillip Emanuel was prolific and showed signs of true genius.

Symphony No. 1, in three movements (fast-slow-fast), originally in D major, has been transposed down a step to C by arranger Justin Bland.

This very fine arrangement (the entire work) of about 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and can be the cornerstone of a recital program.

Instrumentation: Trumpets (parts in C and B-flat), Horn in F, Trombone and Tuba.
