You'll be surprised to know that this great sounding work uses only six notes in all instruments, with the exception of the clarinets, which also use a low written B to involve the right hand. The piece has a Renaissance quality to it and includes a middle processional theme (at the same tempo) to work on legato playing. Optional parts are included for clarinet 2 and trumpet 2. There is something for everyone in this dynamic addition to the repertoire!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a donkey in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well.Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann Andre. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition.with parts for horn in F and Eb major.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss' corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like Zueignung, Die Nacht, and Allerseelen, are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. St. Cecilia's Day was celebrated in England during Restoration times with a great festival of music. The soloists were among the best singers of the day, and their music was deliberately florid to show their virtuosity. It is in this tradition that Purcell wrote his festal ,Te Deum and Jubilate'. It was composed for St. Cecilia's Day, 1694, and shows the same ornate style as he odes composed in previous years. It was the grand manner which assured the popularity of the work. Persichetti was a big fan of the poetry of e.e. cummings, having set a number of texts to music. Four Cummings Choruses, Op. 98, Flower Songs (Cantata No. 6), Op. 157, Glad and Very (5 Cummings Choruses, Cantata No. 5), Op. 129, Spring Cantata (Cantata No. 1), Op. 94, and Two Cummings Choruses, Op. 33 (G. Schirmer) are among his best-known choral works. The two poems in Opus 46 are very dissimilar; while Hist Whist may best be performed in a Halloween concert (little ghost-things, twitchy witches, the old woman with the wart on her nose), This Is the Garden is a flowing, layered, multi-colored descriptive choral. The Two cummings Choruses was premiered at the 1952 MTNA Conference in Dallas, TX by the Sigma Alpha Iota Chorus.
