Jacob vs. Angel is a piece about crisis of conscience, ambiguity, and misinterpretation expressed through the depiction of a major battle, the goal of which is never made entirely clear. Based on the biblical story, the work is highly programmatic, with each of the six movements reflecting a corresponding stanza from the titular poem by Alice Weaver Flaherty. The piece was originally composed as a vehicle for virtuoso organist Heinrich Christensen, and later orchestrated. The first movement introduces the main musical material--a five note motive, the intervals of which are reorganized to create melodic and harmonic development throughout the piece. The second, third, and fourth movements depict the brutal fight between Jacob and the angel, and lead one to the next without pause. The fifth movement is about the post-battle scene, and the final movement is an epilogue, reframing the ideas from the previous movements. The composition Roma born after a short travel in the eternal city. The multiple cultural, historical and landscaped stimuli that derive from its ruins must touch the mind of every visitor dipping it and transporting it behind in the history: these are the feelings that have inspired the composition of a conceptualistic-descriptive music work, dedicated to the places that more meant during the authorâ??s travel.
First part, â??Anfiteatro Flavioâ??, is clearly dedicated to Colosseo. It is so imposing and majestic that recalls still today the outcry of the battles and the noise of the iron: all that is translate in music with frequent changes of time and a virtuosistic and pressing writing. The apex of the fight marks in the composition a growing culminated in a moment of suspension and the immediate resumption with change of theme for the victory moment and its majestic celebration.
The second part, â??Villa Borgheseâ??, marks the passage to a situation of ecstasy and serenity inspired from the beauty and tranquillity of the places of the famous roman park. The composition develops with sweetness but are also present dissonant notes that recall the park contextualizzation in the heart of the city, with its chaotic present and with the urgent violence of its past.

Prayer is one of the composer's most original and sophisticated works. The typical African-American church service seems to be a source for this piece with its interplay of sections and colors, yet the work in form and rhythmic choices is clearly 'classical' and never breaks out into easy imitations of, for example, gospel music.The work opens with the choir singing the spiritual 'My Lord, What a Mornin'' in octaves, sung flat-out a cappella, as might happen in church. The instrumental section following this opening feels very much like a thoughtful response by the congregation. Instruments seem to behave like individual churchgoers, colorfully dressed and answering various episodes with individual thoughts. As for any fears that the mighty organ might drown out the proceedings, Singleton puts that to rest by employing it almost like another choir or section of the choir. The trumpet soloist does not blast us into heaven, it tends to sing and, we find out later, is preparing us for the spiritual 'Where Shall I Be When the Firs' Trumpet Soun'?' Even the tenor soloist behaves much like just another (but still important) instrument.The composer has chosen to not only feature spirituals, but also to set a poetic text called A Christian Prayer, whose main message, almost like some modern-day Kyrie, calls out 'save us teach us ' and extols the importance of humility and the defeat of violence. Singleton has always been a composer who has simultaneously answered the call to carry out what he feels is his duty to his fellow humans while using the finest of his art to do so, and Prayer finds him at the top of his game.- Carman Moore.

Bellum et Pax is a composition describing the two ancient concepts of ‘war’ and ‘peace.’ While this piece appears to be one single movement, it consists of four sections that flow into one another. Mysterious and threatening tones lead the way into an epic battle between the chaos of war and enlightenment of peace. Peace triumphs, but menacing bass notes at the end symbolize the constant presence and threat of war and violence in the world.

Written for the Chapel Choir of University College, Oxford, Giles Underwood, Director of Music. This setting of Pireeni Sundaralingam's poem LOT'S WIVES (about the Sri Lankan Civil War that took place between 1983-2009) was written in June of 2023, during the war between Russia and Ukraine and four months before the escalation between Israel and Palestine. Bruce Adolphe describes the work: “As a composer, I was drawn to the way the poem looks back in time as the women look back on destruction, creating a temporal counterpoint of past and present. To set these words, I combined the sorrowful lyricism of looking back to the past with the fierce dissonance of present violence. The cello plays several roles: it triggers memory; it comments on the text and on the music that is sung; it provides accompaniment.”.

Judith Butler defines 'precarity' as the unequal distribution of precariousness. These are precarious times, in which access to safe clean water is an endangered human right, increasingly under siege by the damage to the planet brought about by humankind's excesses. But this is also an epoch of systemic inequality, in which corporations, municipalities, and nation-states can and do inflict incremental or drastic harm on entire vulnerable populations, through war, deregulated pollution, and the differential withholding of basic life needs. Jasbir Puar has called out this cruel, largely unchecked capacity of the powerful, which she critically labels 'the right to maim.' The people of Flint, Michigan became a historic example of a living population subjected to this kind of violence, in the form of environmental racism.
