Many texts have been set to the well-known folk tune O WALY WALY, but it seems at home in this moving testimony of Calvary's love. A tasteful piano part moves in and out of the choral textures with sensitive understanding. The vocal ranges explore lower tessituras and thus grant a deep richness to the anthem's timbre. This octavo immerses the listener in the story and looks without flinching at the cross and its ministry of grace. Breathtaking! Score and Parts (vn, vc) available as a digital download.

Since the release of his first two compositions, works by the young American Daniel Elder have won many prizes. Elder has set an erotic and sensuous text from the Song of Songs in this composition for four-part choir (without divisi). Although the metaphor of the uniqueness of the beloved like an apple tree between the trees in a forest has often been set, Elder succeeds in finding a completely individual, tender musical language for this text. The work is also easy for amateur choirs to sing: all the parts have cantabile lines in comfortable registers. This could become a very popular piece for church choirs to sing at weddings as well as in concerts. Elder creates a peaceful, intimate atmosphere, with vocal parts which are independent, singable and linear, frequently writing in passages with thirds or sixths. The setting is harmonic in style. However, the piece never descends into saccharine or kitsch, as there are brief flashes of dissonance, sparingly used unexpected alterations, and diminished chords.

Invictus Rex is the Latin phrase for an invincible or undefeatable king. It calls to mind a paragon of strength, boldness, and confidence in the face of challenges and adversity. Audiences will imagine a medieval king attired in heavy armor confidently leading his men into battle, assured in the idea that, though the battle is to be long and arduous, they will ultimately reign victorious. New composer Matthew Putnam draws on his experience as a music educator to provide us with this piece that students will absolutely love to play.

Realms of Endless Day is a fantasy setting of the hymn tune melody, Picardy. This melody, thought to have been named for the region in France where it is believed the melody originated, is also the melody for the hymns Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence and Christians, Let Us Love One Another, as well as the Hymn of Saint James. This enduring and tuneful melody is given three contrasting statements that gradually build to an exciting conclusion. This piece is scored for full orchestra by arranger Michael Kamuf, but will work quite effectively with strings alone. (3:30).

For Teresa was commissioned by Tim Suter for his wife, Helen, as part of William Howard’s Love Songs Project and was first performed privately by William Howard for her 60th birthday in February 2017. He gave the public premiere at Hoxton Hall, London on 26th April 2017. The music is based on the notes T E S (E flat) A of the Christian name of the composer’s wife, Teresa Cahill. The music works towards a quotation of the opening of Beethoven’s Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor, Für Elise (which also uses letters from the name Therese, H being B natural in German nomenclature), a piece which, it is now thought, was originallytitled Für Therese and possibly composed for Theresa Malfatti, to whom Beethoven unsuccessfully proposed marriage in 1810, but recent musicology has suggested other possible dedicatees.

There’s a Boat Dat’s Leavin’ Soon for New York/It Ain’t Necessarily So/Summertime/I Got Plenty o' Nuttin’ is a song from the American opera Porgy and Bess, composed in 1935 by George Gershwin (1898-1937), to a libretto by DuBose Heyward and his brother Ira Gershwin, after Heyward’s novel Porgy - a story about the love between the crippled negro beggar Porgy and the girl Bess in the city of Charleston in South Carolina. The première - not a huge success - took place on 10 October 1935 in New York. With his opera, Gershwin wanted to gain recognition as a composer of classical music. Incidentally he demanded that all parts were sung by black performers; only a few unimportant parts, without sung lyrics, were allowed to be performed by white actors. This rule still applies: Gershwin has stated in the terms of his will that only black people were allowed stage the opera.Porgy & Bess has become popular only after Gershwin’s death. In 1959 a wonderful film was made; the soundtrack won a Grammy Award. The work is not very often performed, possibly because of the difficulty of finding a whole cast of black opera singers. However, various pieces from the opera are still regularly performed in numerous arrangements.
