Composed by Jean-Michel Defaye in 1954, Two Dances is the piece that put him under the international spotlight. Written for trombone and piano, it quickly became standard for the trombone repertoire and would fit advanced players' skills. The first part, called âDanse Sacrée,â is a slow lyrical melody that is re-used through the piece until the cadenza and the second, âDanse Profane,â has a samba rhythm with a really cheerful end. These two pieces both contain some basics of Jazz. As a pianist, composer, producer and arranger, Jean-Michel Defaye mainly created pieces for brass and wind instruments. He won the Premier Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1958 and the Belgian Queen Elizabeth composition competition in 1959.

The present volume of the Sibelius Complete Edition contains seven orchestral works, five of which Jean Sibelius originally composed as stage music but later separated from the incidental-music connection to be performed as individual compositions in concerts. The tone poem Finlandia Op. 26 originates from the Music for the Press Celebration Days (JS 137, 1899). Valse triste and Scen med tranorna (Scene with the Cranes, Op. 44 Nos. 1 and 2) were composed for the 1903 premiere of Arvid Jarnefelt's play Kuolema (Death, incidental music JS 113); Canzonetta and Valse romantique (Op. 62a and 62b) were additions to a 1911 stage production of Kuolema. The two waltzes under the opus number 96, Valse lyrique (Op. 96a) and Valse chevaleresque (Op. 96c), are orchestral versions of works also known as compositions for piano. Of the works only Scen med tranorna remained unpublished during Sibelius's lifetime. It was also probably intended to be published - the autograph score is preserved under Breitkopf & Hartel tenure in the Sachsisches Staatsarchiv in Leipzig - but the first edition of the score and the parts were not printed until 1973. This print was made from a scribal copy by an unknown copyist, and the edition of Scen med tranorna based on Sibelius's autograph is available for the first time in the present volume.

The first movement has a dreamy and dramatic impressionistic quality, whereas the second movement is deeply melancholy and religious sounding. The third movement is playful with pulsating rhythms, which demonstrate a symphonic jazz feel. In 1963, at the age of thirty, Lane quickly formed up a close friendship with Paul Van Ness through their involvement with the Ridgewood Orpheus Glee Club (NJ), an all-male choir for which Lane was appointed accompanist. Lane maintained the accompanist position for this group for forty-one years until his death in 2004. Lane dedicated his Sonata 2 to Van Ness as a high school graduation present in 1965. During this period Lane also composed a piano suite for four hands, and a fantasy for piano and orchestra, along with other solo instrumental, choral and orchestral works. Van Ness performed the world premiere of Piano Sonata 2 at his Senior Recital in 1969, five years after its conception, at the Eastman School of Music, Lane’s alma mater. Karl Tricomi, another student of Lane’s and also graduate of the Eastman School of Music performed this second Sonata in 1976 at Carnegie Hall (NY) as well.

Steeped in the Count Basie style, Miles to Go starts with a trio (tenor sax, trumpet and trombone) introducing the melody over the rhythm section. With each successive phrase, sections are added until the whole band is in full swing. The solo section introduces a staple of blues playing and a technique heard in jam sessions everywhere - stop time, giving soloists a chance to create lots of excitement. The chart concludes with descending bell tones in the brass leading to a unison shout chorus. With its up-tempo feel and brash shouts from all instruments, Miles to Go is sure to be a crowd pleaser that is perfect to open or close any concert.

First critical edition. The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus is one of George Frideric Handel's most popular choral works. It was performed over fifty times during the composer's lifetime and was one of his first works to be performed in Germany (1772). The frequent performances given by Handel himself resulted in a particularly large number of reworkings, reflecting local conditions. This new edition therefore offers the work in two performable versions: firstly, the version of the first performance in 1747, and the one from the last oratorio season during Handel's lifetime (1758/59). This makes available all the choruses and arias which Handel ever wrote for Judas Maccabaeus. Reflecting the latest Handel research, the edition is based for the first time throughout on Handel's conductor's score, thereby eradicating not only long-perpetuated mistakes, but also providing clarity about which pieces were actually performed by Handel. By contrast with the Chrysander edition obligatory until now, the aria Father of heav'n which introduces Part III is included here in its original, longer version. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5506300.

As if looking back on his youth toward the end of his life, Richard Strauss wrote a second concerto for horn and orchestra, again in Eb major, around sixty years after his first concerto for horn. This sublimely beautiful late work, which gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss poor health and the Second World War, was premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the direction of Karl Böhm. It was not until after Strauss death that the concerto appeared in print in London, making a critical new edition on the basis of the autograph sources and performance material more than overdue. The editor, Hans Pizka, former principal horn of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, learned first-hand about the performance tradition and genesis of the concerto as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg. For use in lessons and for performances, the especially playable piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit is a great help.

On the 2nd March 1714 Bach, who until then had been employed as a chamber musician and organist at he Court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, was promoted to the position of concert master, and was instructed to relieve the ailing Kapellmeister Johann Samuel Drese by composing and performing new pieces monthly for the church. Following the cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. The extraordinary musical ambition evident in the first Weimar cantatas may have had its roots in the fact htat Bach aspired to become Drese's successor as Court Kapellmeister. ‘Circus Delight’ is a five-part suite which is set, how could it be otherwise, in a big circus tent. The suite starts with a part called ‘Entrance’. The orchestra, positioned above the entrance of the ring asks for the attention of the audience and then the ring announcer enters. The show can begin! The elephants play a central role in the first act. These colossal grey animals are rather slow and perform their tricks in a moderate tempo. (‘Elephant Blues’) How different are ‘The Acrobats’. At high speed they run, jump and fly through the ring, until ....... It gets very exciting. Fortunately, all’s well that ends well and they take their leave of the audienceat a trot. Everyone knows, and yet it is mostly not spoken about, that when a clown has taken off his red nose and rubbed off his make-up, his face off-stage is not always a happy one. (‘Tears of the Clown’) The piece ends on a cheerful note with ‘The Parade’, in which all the artists make their entrance in the ring once again to gratefully acknowledge the audience’s overwhelming applause. ‘Circus Delight’ is een vijfdelige suite die zich afspeelt in, hoe kan het ook anders, een grote circustent. De suite begint met ‘Entrance’. Het orkest dat boven de ingang van de piste zit vraagt de aandacht van het publieken de spreekstalmeester komt binnen. De voorstelling kan beginnen. De olifanten staan centraal in de eerste act. De grote grijze kolossen zijn niet de snelste dieren en vertonen hun kunsten in een rustig tempo. (‘ElephantBlues’) Bij ‘The Acrobats’ is dat wel even anders.
