WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of ‘La Valse’ was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke’s The Unknown Journey (2014) forconcert band, and the use of Ravel’s La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke’s aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer’s view is that little inmusic does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. Asthe music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.

De oorsprong ligt in Sparkes The Unknown Journey (2014) voorharmonieorkest. Het is een diepe buiging naar Ravels La Valse, die wordt gebruikt als een soort structurele onderstroom van een origineel stuk muziek, met als doel een werk te maken dat organisch van karakter is. De componist heeftverschillende gedeelten uit het meesterwerk ingebracht, zowel bewerkt als letterlijk geciteerd met veel van de prachtige slotpassages om de algehele opbouw van zijn nieuwe werk te scheppen. Naarmate demuziek voortgaat, verschijnt er meer vanRavel, waarna de wals volledig opduikt in de apotheose: een fraai eerbetoon aan de Franse meester.

SIEGER EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of La Valse wurde für die Cory Band als selbst ausgewähltes Prüfungsstück bei den European Brass Band Championships 2016 in Lille komponiert. Die Komposition hat ihren Ursprung in Sparkes 2014 entstandenemStück The Unknown Journey für Blasorchester. Es handelt sich um eine Art Hommage, denn Ravels La Valse wird hier als formale Grundlage für ein eher in sich geschlossenes und nicht nur episodenhaftes Originalwerk verwendet. DemKomponisten zufolge gibt es kaum eine Musik, die dies besser vermag als La Valse. Er verwendet verschiedene Abschnitte aus diesem Meisterwerk, sowohl bearbeitet als auch direkt übernommen inklusive zahlreicher fantastischer Schlusspassagen ,um die Gesamtstruktur seines neuen Werkes darzustellen. Je mehr die Musik voranschreitet, umso mehr wird Ravels Einfluss erkennbar, vor allem beim Erreichen des musikalischen Höhepunktes des gesamten Stückes eine Hommage an den französischenMeister.

L’œuvre tire son origine de la pièce de concert pour orchestre d’harmonie de Sparke,The Unknown Journey (2014). Une marque de respect La Valse, ce nouveau morceau utilise l’œuvre de Ravel comme sous-courant structurel et a comme objectif un genre organique plutôt qu’épisodique. D’après le compositeur, La Valseest l’un des seuls morceaux qui réussit accomplir ceci. Il se sert de plusieurs sections de ce chef d’œuvre, aussi bien modifiées que citées telles quelles y inclus laplupart de ses magnifiques passages finaux pour établir la structure généralede ce nouveau morceau. Plus la musique progresse, plus la musique de Ravel apparaît, et domine alors que l’apogée est atteinte un hommage au maestro français.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!

De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd. Dit concertwerk in de reeks door Jacob de Haan verklankte staten is een suite in drie delen, gebaseerd op een bekende volksmelodie uit Arkansas.Tijdens de eerste maten komt in de euphoniums en bassen direct de volksmelodie naar voren, die uitmondt in een aantal lyrische maten. Deze vormen de inleiding tot een sneller tempo (Allegro risoluto) waarin de melodie in fragmenten wordt geëxposeerddoor euphoniums, baritons en bugel, canonisch beantwoord door de trombones. In het daaropvolgende Allegro molto klinkt een concertino-achtig spel in diverse instrumentgroepen, afgewisseld met een nieuwe, zangerige melodie. Het deel sluit af met devolksmelodie in de trombones, maar nu gedempt.Het tweede deel is een ballade waarin de volksmelodie in majeur klinkt. Na een inleiding van gedempte cornetten en trombones gevolgd door zacht koper is de melodie te horen in de euphoniums en baritons in een lyrische zetting. Even wordt detoonsoort weer mineur, wanneer instrumentgroepen elkaar imiteren. Met een bugelsolo komen we terug in majeur. Na een tussenspel klinkt een ornamentele variatie, vertolkt door een cornetsolo en euphoniumsolo,waarna een naspel met gedempte cornetten en trombones volgt. Het laatste deel komt tot klinken in een flitsend Allegro vivace, aanvankelijk vergezeld door chromatische lijnen in de begeleiding en een markant, door kwartentriolen afgewisseld ritme in het slagwerk. Dan klinkt de blues door in de cornetten enhoorns, begeleid door een jazzy ritme waarin de sfeer van de Bolero van Ravel even doorklinkt. Dit leidt via een parallelle triolenpassage terug naar het beginthema van dit deel, dat nu in diverse instrumenten te horen is. Dan verschijnt devolksmelodie weer in haar pure vorm in de euphoniums, waarop de bugel en later de solocornet reageert. Via enkele syncopische maten horen we het begin van de melodie nu in majeur gespeeld door respectievelijk cornetten en hoorns. Het slotgedeelteomvat een melodieuze lijn in lange noten die leidt naar een spetterend einde in kwartentriolen.

Dieses Konzertwerk fügt sich in die Reihe der von Jacob de Haan vertonten amerikanischen Staaten. Es ist eine Suite in drei Sätzen auf der Grundlage von einem bekannten Volkslied aus Arkansas. In diesem abwechslungsreichen Werk erklingt das Volkslied ganz und in Fragmenten, in Moll und in Dur, als Ballade in lyrischer Besetzung, in Variationen, als Blues, von einem jazzigen Rhythmus begleitet, und zum Schluss wieder in seiner reinen Form. Dabei kommen alle Instrumentengruppen der Brass Band zum Zug!

Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship, Bergen, February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus.

The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991.

The composer:
In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material.

When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation I¬?m afraid).

The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a norwegian composer).
The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest.
Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren, maar bovenal te respecteren.
Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft.

During the eighteenth century a person called 'the Dance Master' made his appearance in Ireland. He was a travelling dance-teacher, who moved from one village to another to teach the people there how to dance.
They were often flamboyant personalities, gorgeously dressed and holding a staff in one hand.
In order to teach their pupils the difference between their right and left leg, the dance master used to tie a small bunch of straw or hay to their leg and then would order them to either lift their 'hay-leg' or their 'straw-leg'.
The dancing masters used to stay in one particular village for about six weeks (if they were not claimed by a neighbouringvillage), after which they continued their journey.
Having a famous dance master gave a village a certain distinction and did not seldom lead to boasting and pride.
Also on account of the popularity of Celtic music in general at the moment, William Vean was inspired to writing 'The Irish Dance Master'. He 'teaches' you two dances, the Reel and the Jig. In between these two dances there is a short breathing space, during which a traditional Irish rhythm can be enjoyed.

In de achttiende eeuw verscheen een persoon met de naam ‘The Dance Master' op het Ierse toneel. Hij was een rondreizende dansleraar die van het ene dorp naar het andere trok om er mensen te leren dansen. Dit werk bestaat uit twee dansen: een Reel en een Jig.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Wir schlüpfen in die Haut von Miguel und reisen mit ihm nach Australien. Einigermaßen entfremdet von seiner spanischen Heimat schlendert er durch das Viertel The Rocks in Sydney. Auf einem kleinen Markt entdeckt er einen Druck des Gemäldes Pacific Dreams von William DeShazo. Das Bild stellt die Meeresbrandung auf einer exotischen Insel im Pazifik dar. Während die eindrucksvolle Harbour Bridge von Sidney vor ihm auftaucht, ist er in Gedanken bei den heißen Stränden im Stillen Ozean. Auf einmal kommt ihm das Thema in den Sinn, das er einst über die Gewässer Japans komponiert hatte. Liegt es an den asiatischen Einflüssen, die im kosmopolitischen Sydney so vielfältig vertretensind? Oder sind es die Wasser rund um Sydney, über die er nach Tahiti segeln könnte? Er ist sich unsicher. Könnte er genau dieses Thema für eine neue Komposition über die Metropole Sydney verwenden? Wie sollte er seine Träume vom Pazifik, seine Pacific Dreams, in diese Mixtur einbringen? Vielleicht könnte er den Wortschatz von Inseln wie Hawaii und Tahiti für seine Komposition verwenden. Und einen gemischten Chor die schönen Vokalverbindungen ad libitum singen lassen. Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf steigt er in die Metro am Circular Quay. Auf ins Hotel und frisch ans Werk! Jetzt muss er einfach komponieren....

Destination Moon was first performed by Cory Band at the 2017 European Championships in Ostend, Belgium, and is inspired by the Belgian comic-book hero Tintin. The first part is called ‘Science’ and describes the development of the theory of space travel. The second part is ‘Humanity’ which addresses human concerns and philosophies about our place in the universe. The third part is ‘The Launch’ which ends with a repetition of the words ‘Earth to Moon Rocket are you receiving me?’ as the rocket vanishes into a tiny speck in the sky.

Destination Moon werd voor het eerst vertolkt door de Cory Band, tijdens de Europese Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2017 in Oostende, België. Het werk is ge nspireerd op de avonturen van de Belgische stripheld Kuifje. Het eerste deel, ‘Science’, beschrijft de ontwikkeling van de theorie achter de ruimtevaart. Het tweede deel heet ‘Humanity’: het verklankt verschillende menselijke overwegingen en filosofieën rondom onze plaats in het universum; de titel van het derde deel is ‘The Launch’: dit gedeelte eindigt met een herhaling van de woorden ‘Earth to Moon Rocket are you receiving me?’ terwijl de raket verdwijnt tot hij nog slechts een stipje aan de hemel is.

Destination Moon wurde 2017 im Rahmen der 40. European Brass Band Championships in Ostende (Belgien) von der Cory Band uraufgeführt. Als Inspiration für das Stück diente der belgische Comic-Held Tintin (Tim und Struppi“). Der erste Teil, Science“, beschreibt die Entwicklung der Wissenschaftler im Bereich der Raumfahrt. Der zweite Teil, Humanity“, beschäftigt sich mit den menschlichen Gedanken und Philosophien über unseren Platz im Universum. Der dritte Teil, The Launch“, endet mit der Wiederholung der Worte Erde an Mondrakete können Sie mich hören?“, während die Mondrakete als winziger Fleck im Himmel verschwindet.
