English. Text by Fred Pratt Green.
Fred Pratt Green pens the Word as the synonym for Christ in this Christmas song. A melodic topos and limited 4-part writing make this accessible for most choirs. The juxtaposition of harp (or piano), flute, oboe, and bassoon add to the listener’s appreciation for this work.Â

Vol. IV, 1 of the C.P.E. Bach Complete Edition, edited by the Packard Humanities Institute According to C.P.E. Bach, the oratorio Die Israeliten in der Wuste [The Israelites in the Wilderness] can be performed ... at all times, inside and outside the church, simply to the praise of God. The composition depicts the Israelites' journey, full of privations, through the wilderness, their despair and their pleading. This harmonically bold work was first published in 1775 and received numerous performances during the composer's lifetime in German-speaking countries. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3323800.

Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3711000.

Of the five surviving St. Luke Passions by Telemann, this first printing of the Passion of 1744 distinguishes itself first with, aside from expressive arias, the dramatic choruses. In contrast to his other Passions, Telemann only uses three chorales here: as an opening, during the scene on the Mount of Olives, and as a closing. This setting of the Passion is an full-evening of music of only moderate difficulty and moderate scoring requirements. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3949500.
