Funk is a very rhythmic music style that finds its origin in the 1960s. The American artist James Brown and the New Orleans-based group The Meters are considered the founders of this genre. Funk is characterized by an independentbass line that emphasizes each first beat of the bar (the one), as well as by a rhythmic combination of syncopated melodies and accompaniments with lots of harmonic additions. This style-conscious composition by Peter KleineSchaars contains a healthy blend of the harmonic ingredients as well as the rhythmic challenges of funk music. On the one hand, New Orleans Funk is an educational exercise with the rhythmic cells 9,10, 14, 15 and 16: on the otherhand, it is a funky highlight of your rehearsal or concert!

Funk is een sterk ritmische muziekstijl die in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw is ontstaan. De Amerikaanse muzikant James Brown en de uit New Orleans afkomstige groep The Meters worden beschouwd als de grondleggers van ditgenre. Naast een zelfstandige baslijn die elke eerste tel van de maat (the one) stevig benadrukt, wordt funk gekenmerkt door een ritmisch samenspel tussen syncopische melodieën en begeleidingen met veel harmonische toevoegingen.Deze stijlbewuste compositie van Peter Kleine Schaars bevat zowel de harmonische ingrediënten als de ritmische uitdagingen die erbij horen. Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen’s (1964) way of composing can be described as: uncompromising, wilful and contemporary. It is not surprising, therefore, that this occasionally causes a stir.
In the middle of the Seventies a trend arose in youth culture, which was characterized by provocation, distrust of the great ideologies, and the autonomy of the individual.
Punk is playful, aggressive, often humorous, and anti-everything, which inevitably leads to self-irony.
The first part of Aagaard-Nielsen’s composition (Introduction) is a texture based mainly on one short theme.
This pompous theme breathes a spirit of cold empty plains, where icy winds sigh around yourhead.
In the vehement Punk (Presto barbaro!) there is no longer any question of a theme. The basis for this part is formed by a repetitive motif (a descending minor third).
This motif is alternated with very powerful percussion beats and later on shrill harmonies.

De wijze van componeren van Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen (1964) laat zich omschrijven als: compromisloos, eigenzinnig en eigentijds. Niet verwonderlijk dat dit af en toe wat stof doet opwaaien.
Midden zeventiger jaren ontstaat er eenstroming binnen de jongerencultuur, die provocatie, wantrouwen tegen de grote ideologieën en de autonomie van het individu centraal stelt.
Punk is speels, agressief, veelal humoristisch en anti-alles, wat onvermijdelijk leidttot zelfspot.
Het eerste deel (Introduction) is een weefsel, gebaseerd op voornamelijk één kort thema. Het pompeuze thema ademt de sfeer van kille lege vlakten, waar de ijzige wind je om de oren suist.
Tijdens de ‘heftige’Punk (Presto barbaro!) is van een thema geen sprake meer. De basis voor dit deel is een steeds herhalend motief (dalende kleine terts). Dit motief wordt afgewisseld met zeer krachtige percussie slagen en later schrille samenklanken.Dit alles zorgt voor een bombastisch geheel.
Aan het slot van de Punk horen we het intoductie-thema tussen het punkgeweld door terugkomen.

Deze fanfare schreef Satoshi Yagisawa voor het jubileum van een blaasorkest waarvan hij met de dirigent ervan een heel goed band heeft. Hij wilde daarom een werk schrijven waarin het gehele orkest in volle glorie tot zijn recht zoukomen. Diese Fanfare schrieb Satoshi Yagisawa für das Jubiläum eines Blasorchesters, mit dessen Dirigent er sich sehr gut verstand. The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its ownmomentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel’s La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.

The Unknown Journey is geschreven in opdracht van de Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, die werd opgericht in 1954 en daarna is uitgegroeid tot een van de beste universiteitsorkesten van Japan. De componist heeft de titel gekozen omdathet werk zijn eigen drijfkracht leek te creëren terwijl het zich ontwikkelde vanuit een langzaam begin en steeds in een wat hoger tempo. Tegen het slot wordt de muziek geleidelijk getransformeerd tot de laatste maten van Ravels La Valse, eencompositie die het concept van een onstuitbare drijfkracht perfect karakteriseert.

The Unknown Journey wurde von der 1954 gegründeten Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, die zu den besten Universitäts-Blasorchestern Japans zählt, in Auftrag gegeben. Der Komponist wählte diesen Titel, da das Stück seinen eigenen Schwungzu entwickeln scheint, indem es langsam beginnt und das Tempo sich kontinuierlich steigert. Zum Ende hin verwandelt es sich allmählich in die Schlusstakte von Ravels La Valse, ein Stück, das die Idee des unaufhaltsamen Schwungs perfektbeschreibt.

The Unknown Journey fut commandé par le Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, un orchestre d’harmonie établi en 1954 qui est désormais l’un des meilleurs orchestres universitaires du Japon. Le compositeur choisit ce titre puisque, pendantle développement du morceau, il semblait créer son propre élan, commençant lentement et accélérant continuellement. Vers la fin il devient progressivement semblable aux dernières mesures de La Valse de Ravel, un morceau qui caractériseparfaitement l’idée d’élan irrépressible.
