The collection of nine Vedic Hymns (Op. 24) for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment marked a turning point in Holst's compositions. They were inspired by Hindu scripture and Indian raga, and first published in1908. Vac (Speech) is the seventh movement, and is the first of the third group of hymns, where the theme shifts into the human sphere.
Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher.Having studied under Stanford and Parry, he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams - they would often critique each other's work - and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for hisPlanets suite.

Tam O'Shanter was first performed at a Henry Wood Promenade Concert on 17 August 1955, with Malcolm Arnold conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was received with tremendous enthusiasm, and was, without doubt, the most popular novelty during the 1955 season of Promenade Concerts. The composer is at pains to point out that, whereas the earlier overture Beckus the Dandipratt is not descriptive but merely a musical impression, Tam O'Shanter is very definitely programme music.

Throughout his career, Camille Saint-Saens composed nearly 150 songs. A short while before his death, in 1921, he bade farewell to songwriting with the delivery of Trois Vieilles Chansons. Along with the Cinq Poemes de Ronsard, composed in the same year, this final collection shows Saint-Saens returning to the poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries, a source from which Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet and Jules Massenet had already drawn.
