Friedhelm Rentzsch, long a cellist in the Dresden Philharmonic, set Psalm 130, whose character of penitence is especially impressive here, through the reduction of the musical forces to a solo alto with orchestral accompaniment, and this in a most unique, urgent manner. Through the addition of a sombre text by Erich Arendt the subective manner of the song is placed in a worldly context encompassing all periods of time. Repeatedly, passages of a quiet character alternate with tutti phases which sometimes climax to passages employing clusters.

Rudolf Mauersberger, the cantor of the Dresden Kreuzkirche, shaped his Christvesper in the Christmas tradition of the Erzgebirge in Saxony. The work underwent a long period of gestation and first attained its final form in 1963. The entire church is used for a performance: On the altar the Christmas story from Luke is presented, in four different corners of the church the Quempas or responsorial singing between congregation and cantor takes place, and in the gallery Die Weissagung or Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe are sung; in addition the chorales and songs are performed by a separate group of instruments. Thus the Christvesper, this impressive choral work which is still in the realm of tonality, provides a new accent in the well-known Christmas repertoire. Score available separately - see item CA.720100.

The world famous tale Hansel and Gretel by The Brothers Grimm was set to music in the 1890s by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The children's opera is performed regularly at many opera houses.
The Evening Prayer 'When at night I go to sleep', with which the two kids sing themselves to sleep, is one of the most famous songs of this opera, and is also used as the beginning of the overture.
This arrangement is scored for wind quintet with an english horn. In case no english horn should be available, we present an alternative version that features an oboe instead. The flute nd bassoon players will then use the same parts as in the version with english horn.
