Again, Peter Kleine Schaars composed four dances, in which he, by means of refreshing chords, uncomplicated rhythms and simple melody lines, takes youthful musicians to The Dance Club. “The idea of writing the Danzón No.2 originated in 1993 during a trip to Malinalco with the painter Andrés Fonseca and the dancer Irene Martínez, both of whom are experts in salon dances with a special passion for the danzón, which they were able to transmit to me from the beginning, and also during later trips to Veracruz and visits to the Colonia Salon in Mexico City. From these experiences onward, I started to learn the danzón’s rhythms, its form, its melodic outline, and to listen to the old recordings by Acerina and his Danzonera Orchestra. I was fascinated and I started to understand that the apparent lightness of the danzón is only like a visiting card for a type of music full of sensuality and qualitative seriousness, a genre which old Mexican people continue to dance with a touch of nostalgia and a jubilant escape towards their own emotional world; we can fortunately still see this in the embrace between music and dance that occurs in the State of Veracruz and in the dance parlors of Mexico City. The Danzón No.2 is a tribute to the environment that nourishes the genre. It endeavors to get as close as possible to the dance, to its nostalgic melodies, to its wild rhythms, and although it violates its intimacy, its form and its harmonic language, it is a very personal way of paying my respects and expressing my emotions towards truly popular music. It came in three different ways: directly from Spain, the colonial metropolis; with the British, who occupied Havana in 1762; and the French colonizers and their slaves who landed in Cuba's Eastern shores after fleeing from the Haitian Revolution. From all of that trans-cultural process the Danzon was born. This new Cuban dance, naturalized by the Creoles, had much more expressive freedom: the couple danced in each other's arms, and the dancing time was extended. People began calling it Danzon and it was in Matanzas, in the 1870s that figure dancing also began to be called Danzon. Thus, Failde, an outstanding musician, named his composition with the generic name of Danzon..

Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, my Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for violin solo and orchestra, and premiered by The Women's Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, I've composed three movements in the suite: 1) Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In the composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from traditional Guangdong Music tune and Chaozhou Music tune ; 2) YangKo. Originated in northern China, it's a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people always play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In my second movement, I have imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members in the orchestra sing the non-pitch syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever going pulse. 3) Muqam. It is a large scale traditional music and dance form from Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. In my third movement, I keep the meter of seven eight and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture cumulates the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. Scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 3 trombones, percussion 1 (3 congas, low tom-tom, temple block, paddle castanets), percussion 2 (snare drum, 6 small Beijing opera gong, 12 big Beijing opera gong, crotales, tambourine), percussion 3 (suspended cymbal, a pair of 6 Chinese cymbals, bass drum), solo violin, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos and double basses. Duration is about 16 minutes. The work is recorded on Bis [CD-1352] and released in 2003, performed by Cho-Liang Lin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Lan Shui. Reduction for B-flat soprano saxophone and piano by Wong Tak Chiu (2017) and edited by Chen Yi (2018) The second movement YangKo is premiered by Dr. Wong and Korak Lerpibulchai at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium on 8/13/2017. The American premiere of the saxophone and piano reduction version of Chinese Folk Dance Suite is given by Chi Him Chik and Hao Yin at the Society for American Music National Conference in Kansas City, MO on 3/2/2018.

Kentish Dances is een suite op basis van dansen uit het Engelse graafschap Kent. Dit graafschap heeft zijn eigen dansmelodieën, wat in Engeland bekend is geworden als ‘country dancing’. Deze danswijsjes waren de bron van ditdriedelige werk van Philip Sparke, waarin levendige en opgewekte melodieën worden afgewisseld door melancholische en zangerige passages. Een betoverend werk!

Wie der Titel schon andeutet, besteht Kentish Dances aus traditionellen Tanzmelodien aus der englischen Grafschaft Kent. Die seit dem 17. Jahrhundert beliebten Volkstänze sind zahlreich überliefert und boten Philip Sparke eine reichhaltige Quelle für dieses dreisätzige Werk, in dem sich lebhafte und beschwingte Melodien, mit melancholischeren Weisen und lieblichen Passagen abwechseln. Bezaubernd!

Kentish Dances (“Danses du Kent”) est une commande du Bromley Youth Music Trust pour le Bromley Youth Concert Band (Orchestre d’Harmonie Junior de Bromley) placé sous la direction de Michael Purton. L’œuvre a été donnée en création par la formation dédicataire, le 16 mars 2008 au St John’s, Smith Square Londres.La ville de Bromley est située dans le comté du Kent l’extrémité sud-est de l’Angletrerre. Le Kent possède un riche patrimoine culturel traditionnel et notamment de nombreux airs de danses comme beaucoup d’autres régions anglaises. Connue en Angleterre sous le nom de country dancing, la contredanse fut plébiscitée par les classes moyenne et aiséeanglaises la période élisabéthaine, supplantant les formelles gaillardes et pavanes en vigueur la cour royale. La contredanse connut une telle notoriété que de nombreux ouvrages lui furent consacrés tels que l’English Dancing Master de Thomas Playford, publié en 1651, qui constitue la plus importante source de mélodies de danses traditionnelles léguée la postérité.Michael Purton, Directeur du Bromley Youth Music Trust, suggèra l’idée d’une œuvre basée sur des airs de danses typiques du Kent. Philip Sparke accepta et composa cette suite de danses en trois mouvements. Le premier mouvement est construit sur un moto perpetuo qui développe deux mélodies pétillantes en 6/8 : Dover Castle et The Fair Maid of Wickham. Le mouvement central s’articule autour de l’air Blackheath dont la sombre mélodie contraste de façon charmante et opportune avec la mélodie Bromley Bells. Le finale expose les sémillants We Are All Right at Canterbury et Ramsgate Pier. La valse cadencée Northdown Waltz offre un délicieux contraste expressif.
