In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940s.

In 1942 meldde Glenn Miller zich aan voor het Amerikaanse leger en richtte hij de Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band op. Met zijn muziek hield hij de moraal van de troepen hoog. In december 1944 ging hij in Engeland aan boord van eenvliegtuig dat zijn bestemming (Frankrijk) niet zou bereiken - het toestel werd nooit gevonden. De patriottische legende van zijn persoon leeft echter voort in zijn muziek. Pennsylvania 6-5000 is nog altijd een van de grootstesuccessen van zijn vermaarde orkest.

Das Thema des bekannten Swing-Standards Pennsylvania 6-5000 entstand im Jahr 1940 während eines dreimonatigen Engagements des Glenn-Miller-Orchesters im New Yorker Hotel Pennsylvania. Bei diesem Thema handelte es sich um nichts anderes als die Vertonung der Telefonnummer des Hotels. Kurz nach dem Aufenthalt im Hotel wurde die Aufnahme des Stückes gemacht, das sich bis heute als absoluter Dauerbrenner erwiesen hat. Masato Myokoin arrangierte die flotte Swingnummer für Blasorchester.

Deux ans plus tard, Glenn Miller disparaît mystérieusement en Manche. Il reste pour le public une véritable légende et ses airs les plus célèbres sont dans toutes les mémoires : In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade et, bien entendu, A Strings of Pearls.

The two pieces which comprise Cameo Suite’’ come from diverse backgrounds, one American and the other English. The Nightingale’’ is a traditional English folksong about unrequited love. The Glendy Burk’’ was composed by Stephen Foster and is a riverboat song depicting the life and times of the riverboat Glendy Burk’’ on the Mississippi.

No longer just a facsimile: Sibelius's Symphony No. 0 in a proper edition With the world premiere of Kullervo in 1892, Jean Sibelius staked his claim at the age of 27 to the front ranks of the symphonists of his day, long before he began writing his purely instrumental symphonies and tone poems. At the same time, he defined himself as a modern-day Finnish composer through his choice of the text from the Kalevala epic, whose title role he interpreted with modern psychological means. By the time Sibelius was celebrating his major international triumphs in the early 20th century, his Symphony No. 0 was long forgotten. After a provisory first edition of Kullervo in 1966, the work quickly gained the esteem of Sibelius conductors who also performed the work with the Finnish vocal text outside of their native country. Yet in spite of pioneer recordings such as those of Paavo Berglund, Colin Davis, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Osmo Vanska, the grandiose work had not been adequately present in international concert life up to now not least because there was no practicable edition. The volumes of the Complete Edition edited by Glenda Dawn Goss now offer a musicologically accurate music text for the first time. This music text will form the basis for the projected performance material. The complete edition Jean Sibelius Werke intends to pave the way for a new evaluation of the Finnish composer and, in particular, of this hitherto editorially neglected work, the composer's only choral symphony.
