The origins of Marcel Dupre's Offertoire Il est ne, le divin Enfant lie in a gift from father to daughter. Marguerite (1909-63), a very capable pianist, married in 1948 and moved with her husband to Chevire-le-Rouge, near Angers. The church there had, according to Marguerite, a poor organ and no organist. She agreed to undertake the role, and in anticipation of playing for the Midnight Mass of Christmas in that same year, she asked her father to write a short offertoire in the style of Daquin. Marcel Dupre kindly arranged to have a small organ relocated from their residence in Meudon and the registration instructions in the score match the specification of this instrument. Our edition includes the specification of the Louis Bonn organ as well as minor editorial commentary.We are grateful for permission granted from Marcel Dupre's descendents for permission to make this work available to the general public.

The image of a landscape in April, freed from winter's hold, with its mixture of barrenness and still dull colours, characterises the basic tone of this piece. Melodic elements and fast virtuoso figurations cannot be found, instead the piece is dominated by subtle nuances of just a few sounds and textures. The harmony is based almost entirely on a single chord type. Wilhelm Killmayer puts a single note at the heart of this composition. Butwhereas Robert Schumann took it as the starting point of his romanticism,Killmayer doesn't allow himself the freedom to develop poetic melodies. Just as Schumann deliberately decided to live within the constraints of a mental asylum in Endenich, Killmayer favours the constraints of a very limited tonal space. Recurring seconds in the piano part illustrate the confines in the life of the ill composer. Even the addition of a vibraphone,bongo and conga cannot overcome these boundaries in the end. Adagio/ Minuetto/ Allegro/ GigaMario Gangi lavishes his remarkable versatility on this duo, engaging in a masterly fashion in a Baroque-style composition with repeats, progressions, imitations and embellishments which are managed extremely naturally.The manuscript is basic, without fingering, indications of expression, agogic or dynamic, with the exception of the Giga in which some accented notes and crescendo and decrescendo signs appear that are faithfully reproduced here.Since this is a Suite in Baroque style, it was not thought suitable to burden it with dynamic and expressive indications, thus leaving a certain amount of freedom to the performers.The fingering and the (few) indications concerning tone-colour have been added bearing in mind the instrumental concept of the Maestro.This Suite barocca, together with the Suite spagnola and the Suite italiana, makes up part of a hypothetical tryptich, certainly varied but with stylistic connotations which refer to the musical conception of Mario Gangi.
