Christmas Musical
This Christmas cantata is a faithful retelling of the Christmas story, the gospel, in song and narration, and a wonderful mixture of the new and the old, the traditional and the freshness of the contemporary. The narrations are deep and insightful, demanding much passion and heartfelt emotion. The choir will enjoy these choral arrangements, including one of Jack Schrader's top-selling pieces, Mary, Did You Know? The work makes a strong impact when done with simply choir, piano, and narration; however, full orchestrations are available. Also, the narrations are perfect to suggest the inclusion of costumed actors creating tableaux of the various scenes, so, the work may be fully staged or as simply presented as necessary. Go Tell It! has moments of quiet worship and reflection, as well as the exuberant times of joy and celebration. Written in 2009 for an event to celebrate the Bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, The Last Dance is a musical reflection on contemporary questions about the survival of our planet. It begins with energetic, even frenetic, material exchanged between the instruments. This is interspersed with moments of respose that are gradually extended, until the piece concludes with a quiet final section with solo first violin playing high above the other instruments, an ending open to many different interpretations.

Seppo Pohjola (b. 1965) composed his fifth string quartet, lasting about 20 minutes, in February-March 2018. He was inspired to write it by a visit to the Vincent van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam the previous year, where he was greatly impressed by the vast, comprehensive retrospective and especially the horrifyingly honest self-portraits. The soft opening tones bear an instruction alluding to Schonberg's Verklarte Nacht string sextet: the quiet music must be richly shaded. The notes in the canon-like part writing almost always change at different moments in each instrument, with a longer or shorter delay. The independent lines weave tightly together.
