Have you ever wanted to play some popular J-Pop songs, but the notes are too high, too detailed, too difficult to finger, or the song is too long? To solve such difficulties, the scores are arranged in keys that are easier for wind instruments to play, reviewed the detailed notes, and shortened the length of the songs.

Not many people know that Franz Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and that these versions of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Ãrpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E Major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage ) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The Valse oubliée No. 1 was transcribed by Liszt s virtuoso piano pupil Ferruccio Busoni Notturno, which became famous as the third piece in the Liebesträume series, is a transposed version of the original song ( O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst ) made by the editor of this volume. Whether planning a special service centered on the Care of the Earth, or looking for unique treatments of cherished Creation hymns, these nine arrangements by Nicholas Palmer are a superb addition to the repertoire. The music is expressive and original, at times taking unexpected yet logical turns, and will cause both player and listener to ponder the hymns in a new light. The arranging is pianistic, making good use of pedaling, higher/lower registers, accents, etc., to create a sometimes playful, sometimes plaintive, sound. Tunes include: The Ash Grove, Cantad al Señor, Dix, Lasst uns erfreuen, and others.

As a professor of music education and elementary composition at the Orff Institute in Salzburg which he was instrumental in establishing, the composer Hermann Regner (1928-2008) examined the work of Carl Orff and, like him, rendered outstanding services as a composer to the work with the young generation of up-and-coming musicians. The selection of easy, but not simple stylistic means also characterizes his song cycle 'Wenn du neben mir gehst' on texts of his wife Catarina Carsten. The six songs, with their almost minimalist reduction and carefully extended tonality, are sensitive and deeply moving miniatures, suitable for lessons, but also - as resting points - in the concert hall.

Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed. This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band.

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

It is quite essential from the very start to arouse the musical imagination of the young pupil. That done the problem of teaching dynamics, phrasing, variety of touch, is greatly simplified, because the active and eager cooperation of the student has been won. These pieces have therefor all been made with a definite program on which the pupils can themselves build a more detailed music picture. A number of special technical elements are here found as well; for example: Crossing the hands, Division of a melodic line between the hands, Bringing out of two melodies at once, Frequent use of high and low register. As a preparation for some of the problems of modern music with its less accustomed rhythms and style, these pieces are quite useful.
