Wind Sketches is a top quality concert work for wind band in three movements, inspired by the relationship between man and wind. Trade Winds, in the form of a march, is reminiscent of a shanty, conjuring up seafaring and the tradewinds. Becalmed, harmonically and melodically almost static, depicts the doldrums. All the more contrasting is Riding the Storm, which concerns the love-hate relationship of people to the winds that he needs and at the same times fears.

In recent years, Oklahoma has seen a great increase in the development of wind energy. This development in sustainable energy sources and the winds that flow across the great state serve as the inspiration for this composition. The piece begins by depicting the great open spaces that stretch for miles across the Oklahoma landscape. Small gusts of wind (represented by scalar and arpeggiated passages in the mallets and woodwinds) dance across the landscape. The piece picks up pace as the wind races across the land, turning the turbines and charging towards the future. (5:30).

If you’ve been looking for a march challenge, this is it! Battle of the Winds is a classic circus screamer that wails from start to finish! Low brass and woodwinds get a workout from top to bottom, and the upper voices squeal in battle with the lower voices. Everyone will thrill to the gaudy fun of this vintage circus tune. Not for the faint of heart, and while it’s a technical workout, it’s well worth the effort. One of the most challenging and exciting marches you’ll ever hear!

Spirit of the Winds, a concert/festival work for the developing band, was inspired by the beautiful Temecula Valley of California. Each year, the sky over the valley is filled with hot air balloons creating a visual sight that is not soon forgotten. Of course, balloons are unable to steer and must fly with the gentle breezes of the air current. As a result, those subject to the spirit of the winds can find themselves over festival grounds or floating above the beautiful Temecula Valley vineyards. Beginning with a bold, yet mysterious statement, the introduction gives way to a soaring melody as our flight begins. Cascading figures in the woodwinds create the effect of wind currents followed by a beautiful secondary melodic statement. The original theme returns leading to a very energetic conclusion. Accessible to a wide range of concert bands, Spirit of the Winds provides multiple teaching opportunities and will be enjoyed by both performer and audience.

Composer David Holsinger’s insightful view of the Arc of Life is brought to musical life with L’Arco Della Vita. Departing from usual compositional styles, this work is set on the framework of piano and melodic percussion, presenting a series of ever-winding variations and subsequent vanishing end which provide a musical experience unlike any other. Challenging, but musically rewarding, L’Arco Della Vita utilizes the total soundscape of the concert band. A thought-provoking and engaging work from a master composer!

Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day.The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

Based on a poem by the composer, this piece for better bands displays both sensitive and exciting writing. Contrasting the power and excitement of the entire concert band in its full glory to the beauty and tenderness of the rubato section featuring solo woodwinds, this distinctive piece is wonderful material for concert or contest use.

Hans Werner Henze, adhering to his intentions as a composer and teacher, had already made provision for participation by a ,banda' of amateur musicians in the original version of his arrangement of Giovanni Paisiello's Don Chisiotte (1769) which was given its first performance in 1976 at the first Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano. The movements contained in the opera were combined in a suite. Norbert Studnitzky has arranged the pieces for wind band in the orchestration which is internationally recognized. It is sonorous, freshly conceived old music for bands at lower advanced level.Picc. * 2 * 1 * Engl. Hr. (ad lib.) * Es-Klar. * 3 * Altklar. (ad lib.) * Bassklar. * 2 Altsax. * Tenorsax. * Baritonsax. A major work of lasting importance for the modern symphonic band or wind ensemble by this acknowledged master of the medium. This set of variations on a 7th Century Armenian Communion Easter hymn calls forth every possible sound, color and tonal effect, showing off the winds, brasses and percussion of the modern band in all their glory. An overwhelming conclusion that blends an additional six-voice brass choir with the full band makes this one of the finest closing works for a concert in many years.

Opening with a broad flourish from the upper brass and woodwinds, this truly outstanding prelude will make a powerful opener for any concert. Written as a 3-part rondo, the alternating sections are contrasting in both style and orchestration. Not technically difficult.

Commissioned to honor a beloved teacher who had passed away, this eloquent piece both begins and ends with warm and moving chorale sections. The contrasting allegro con brio theme is full of energy and vitality. While this piece is not very difficult, it features close contemporary harmonies and it provides ample opportunities for expressive playing especially in the woodwinds. Includes lots of tasteful percussion parts to keep your drummers involved. A wonderful composition that will pay big musical dividends and it is a wonderful choice for contest or concert performances. VERY VERY NICE!
