This work was especially composed for a concert series that was characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. Thus, a typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are all concisely contained in this three-minute work. Dit werk is speciaal gecomponeerd voor de concertserie van Adezi, een samenwerkingsverband van Harmonie Orkest Vleuten, De Bazuin (De Meern), het Utrechts Centrum voor de Kunsten (UCK), ZIMIHC, de Stichting Podiumwerkplaats en de Concertzender. Deze partijen hebben de handen ineengeslagen om de blaasmuziek in de regio Utrecht een stimulans te geven die wordt gekenmerkt door een diversiteit van muzikale richtingen. Deze richtingen zijn verklankt in Campus Intrada, genoemd naar de Cultuurcampus, waar de concerten plaatsvinden. Zo zijn een typisch fanfareachtig gedeelte, een jazzy gedeelte en een popgedeelte kernachtig samengevoegd in dit korte werk van 3 minuten.Dieses Werk wurde speziell für eine Konzertreihe komponiert, die sich durch eine Vielfalt an musikalischen Richtungen auszeichnete. The American state of Arkansas is often called 'the natural state' and 'the land of opportunity.' This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan's series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich. In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!Maple Leaf Overture gaat natuurlijk over het bekendste herkenningsteken van Canada: het blad van de esdoorn, in de vlag. Sparke componeerde dit openingswerk speciaal voor een Canadees schoolorkest uit Calgary, voor hun tour door Groot-Brittannië.Een korte fanfare gaat in deze ouverture naadloos over in een jazzachtig, syncopisch vivo. Eerst nemen de hoorns en saxofoons het hoofdthema voor hun rekening. Daarna speelt het hele orkest dit thema. Spanning ontstaatwanneer het snelle hoofdthema een langzaam tweede deel afwisselt. Daarna keert het snelle hoofdthema weer terug. Een snel coda beëindigt de ouverture. Maple Leaf Overture: feestelijk en sprankelend!Maple Leaf Overture trägt das kanadische Wahrzeichen, das Ahornblatt im Titel. Eine kurze Fanfare geht in dieser Ouvertüre nahtlos in eine jazzig synkopiertes Vivo über. Das Hauptthema dürfen erst die Hörner und Saxophone vorstellen, dann spielt das gesamte Blasorchester. Es entsteht Spannung durch den Wechsel zwischen dem schnellen Hauptthema, einem langsameren zweiten Thema und zurück, bevor eine schnellere Coda das Werk beendet.Maple Leaf Overture porte l’emblème du Canada (la feuille d’érable) jusque dans son titre… Ce morceau, composé par Philip Sparke, a été joué par l’Orchestre Symphonique du Lycée de Calgary dans le cadre de sa tournée en Angleterre. La pièce s’ouvre avec une fanfare maestoso, puis un passage en tempo vivo introduit peu peu des rythmes syncopés de style jazzy. Un motif plus doux nous conduira progressivement vers un apogée où le thème central réapparaît. Le morceau se termine par une brève référence la fanfare d’ouverture, suivie d’une rapide coda.Maple Leaf Overture, il cui titolo riporta all’emblema della bandiera canadese (la foglia di acero), è un brano commissionato a Philip Sparke dall’Orchestra Sinfonica di un liceo di Calgary che l’ha eseguita in occasione di una serie di concerti tenutisi in Inghilterra. Il brano apre con una fanfara maestosa che alterna fraseggi affidati alle varie sezioni della banda. Questa successione omogenea in un tempo vivo introduce progressivamente ritmi sincopati in stile jazz. Un tema principale, all’inizio eseguito dai corni e dai sassofoni, sar in seguito ripreso da tutto l’organico. Segue un motivo più dolce che si intercala progressivamente verso un’apoteosi nella qualeviene riproposto il tema principale. Il brano si conclude con un breve richiamo alla fanfara di apertura, seguita da una rapida coda.

This imaginative new work portrays the rich history of the textile industry through music. The decline of the industry is expressed in the opening slow movement with an authentic 12 bar blues. The second movement uses a jazzy rock style blues to show the optimism and solidarity of the mill workers and the final movement uses a strong vocal-style blues to look forward with optimism to the future. Deze blues in twee delen verklankt de nagenoeg verdwenen textielindustrie in het oosten van Nederland. Aanleiding voor de compositieopdracht was de sluiting van de blekerij te Eibergen in Gelderland. Het werk begint met een meeslepende, langzame, authentieke blues die staat voor de vroegere textielindustrie - waaraan deze streek zijn identiteit ontleende. Daarna volgt een snelle blues in een jazzy rockstijl, waarin een hernieuwde identiteit het optimisme voor de toekomst weergeeft. Vervolgens horen we nog een klein stukje hang naar het verleden (‘Sing the Blues’), maar alles komt uiteindelijk goed in het krachtige slotakkoord.Ein mitreißender, langsamer, authentischer Blues, gefolgt von einem schnellen Blues im jazzigen Rockstil: das ist The Blues Factory. Das Stück erzählt von der Geschichte der ostholländischen Textilindustrie, deren Niedergang sich im langsamen Teil des Werkes ausdrückt. Der zweite Teil zeugt mit seinen optimistischen Klängen von der starken Bindung dieses Landstrichs an seine Geschichte und von Hoffnung für die Zukunft. Im wehmütigen Sing the Blues kehrt noch einmal die Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit zurück, bevor das Stück sich mit einem kräftigen Schlussakkord endgültig der Zukunft zuwendet.The Blues Factory dépeint l’avènement et le lent déclin de l’industrie textile de l’Est des Pays-Bas. Cette bipolarité se traduit dans l’œuvre par un blues lent, authentique et insouciant, suivi d’un blues aux inflexions de jazz-rock. Geschrieben für den Musikverein Mörschied, westlich von Frankfurt am Main an der Deutschen Edelsteinstraße gelegen, wurde jeder der drei Sätze von Diamond Concerto nach einem berühmten Diamanten benannt: 1 EARTH STAR ist eher stimmungstechnisch ein Stern. Der Satz beginnt mit einer freien Fantasie des Solisten über einem statischen Akkord des Orchesters. Dieses führt zu einem Allegro Moderato in Moll, in welchem kurze Motive von sowohl Orchester als auch Solist nach und nach wiederholt und entwickelt werden.2 OCEAN DREAM verwendet ein variiertes Zitat aus Music for Battle Creek von Philip Sparke, das ein schmelzende Melodie enthält, die schon im Gedanken an Stevengeschrieben worden war.3 BLUE HEART wurde auf Steven Meads Anregung hin im Bebop-Stil komponiert und weist die Form eines Jazz Waltz auf. Der quasi-improvisatorische Mittelteil enthält eine Passage im Call-and-Response-Muster, die sich zwischen Solist und den hohen Holzbläsern abspielt.Solist: Schwierigkeitsgrad 6Diamond Concerto ist für Euphonium und Klavier erhältlich (AMP 374-401) sowie für Euphonium und Brass Band (AMP 354-030). Diamond Concerto est une œuvre de commande de la formation allemande Musikverein Mörschied, dirigée par le Dr Eric Grandjean, pour un concert avec un invité spécial, le soliste Steven Mead. Ensemble, ils ont créé cette œuvre le 28 avril 2012 au thé tre de la ville d’Idar-Oberstein.Cette commande représente l’un des points culminants d’une amitié de trente années entre le compositeur et le soliste, leur relation ayant donné naissance de nombreux enregistrements et concerts et, maintenant, un concerto. Pendant la composition de cette œuvre, Sparke avait sans cesse l’esprit le son bien particulier de l’euphonium de Steven Mead, et il a employé librement lavariété de styles que ce virtuose mondialement connu a adoptés au cours de sa brillante carrière de soliste.Le village de Mörschied se trouve l’ouest de Francfort-sur-le-Main, dans la région surnommée Route allemande des pierres précieuses, célèbre pour son industrie de la joaillerie. C’est pourquoi le compositeur a décidé de saluer cette province en intitulant son œuvre Diamond Concerto. Les trois mouvements sont chacun nommés d’après un diamant célèbre :1 EARTH STARDe caractère plutôt sérieux, ce mouvement débute avec une fantaisie libre pour le soliste sur un accord statique de l’orchestre. Vient ensuite un Allegro Moderato en mode mineur où de courts motifs sont progressivement répétés et développés par l’orchestre et le soliste.2 OCEAN DREAML’on pourra entendre ici une variante d’un extrait de Music for Battle Creek, incluant une mélodie lente et émouvante, que le compositeur écrivit alors dans l’optique d’une future interprétation réalisée par Steven Mead.3 BLUE HEARTSuivant l’idée de Steven Mead, ce mouvement est écrit dans un style de be-bop et prend la forme d’une valse jazzy. Appropriate for middle school and smaller high school groups. Second clarinets usually stay below the break. Parts are written with more independence, and instrumentation increases slightly. There is still adequate doubling in the lower voices. Grades 2 - 2.5
