The traditional bolero is a moderately slow dance in triple meter which originated in late-18th century Spain. Since then it has spread to other countries and become transformed in the process. The Cuban bolero became a bit faster in tempo and duple in meter. In the U.S. it became a staple of competitive ballroom dancing, even faster and in 4/4 time. Maurice Ravel's Boléro for orchestra harkens back to the slower Spanish dance in three. Wood's Bolero by Mark Wood, on the other hand, focuses on the American version but maintains elements of the dance's origins and first iterations. For string orchestra with optional rock rhythm section parts. (3:10)Download Play-Along Track

This piece, arranged by Dorothy Straub, celebrates the excitement of a very short horse race. Using songs that are sung before each of the three races---songs of Kentucky, Maryland, and New York---the orchestra takes on the role of the winning horse, with the accelerando being the final race to the finish line. Though timely now that the amazing horse, American Pharaoh, won the Triple Crown in June of 2015, this piece was written prior to that event to celebrate all the horses that compete. (6:30).

Forever Free composed at the request of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, André Raphel, Music Director, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the State of West Virginia. Maestro Raphel suggested a work incorporating indigenous elements of the State's musical heritage, capturing in musical sound the robust spirit of West Virginia citizens and the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the year-long commemoration of the State's 150th anniversary, June 20, 2013. Forever Free is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi,†usually translated as “Mountaineers forever free.†Versions for both orchestra and wind band are available.

New edition of this hitherto unpublished 13-minute work, which was first performed in 2002 by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The title clearly suggests a parade; but, as Lindberg points out, in Spanish, 'parada' also denotes a bus-stop or taxi-rank: a wry acknowledgement, perhaps, of the long wait for a slow movement from this composer at that time. For him, Parada is the middle panel of a loosely conceived triptych, the flanking sections of which are Feria (1997) and Cantigas (1999). Lindberg draws a parallel with Debussys Images, in which each of the three parts was conceived and premiered separately, and retains its own identity.

Feature your magnificent violas in this Western-flavored section feature that will give your unsung heroes a chance to show off a variety of playing styles. The piece is divided into three distinct parts---a heroic opening theme, a rousing and flashy fiddle melody, and a beautifully flowing legato section. Easy to put together and fun for every section, this is a wonderful way to introduce your audience (and the rest of your string orchestra) to the wide variety of timbres this too-often neglected instrument can achieve. Great for recruiting concerts! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Three movements, 15:00 total. South Florida Classical Review called Setting Century ...ingeniously crafted. The score is an imaginative essay in orchestral rhythm and color. The initial section Ticking is based on a brief, repeated figure in the violins, like the machinery of a clock. Gradually larger melodic threads emerge. The piano imitates bells over long string lines in Tolling. As the winds and strings branch out to broader, more complex patterns, the overall effect is powerful. Dance-like themes give the entire orchestra a good workout in Streaming. An extended episode for winds exploits the individual instruments’ timbres in striking fashion. ~ Lawrence Budmen. 2(1) 22 2(1); 4231; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 15' Composed: 2004/16 Published by: Distributed Composer Performance materials available on rental only:.

Realms of Endless Day is a fantasy setting of the hymn tune melody, Picardy. This melody, thought to have been named for the region in France where it is believed the melody originated, is also the melody for the hymns Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence and Christians, Let Us Love One Another, as well as the Hymn of Saint James. This enduring and tuneful melody is given three contrasting statements that gradually build to an exciting conclusion. This piece is scored for full orchestra by arranger Michael Kamuf, but will work quite effectively with strings alone. (3:30).

Exit Music for Orchestra was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2006-07. Exit Music was commissioned by the Bergen International Festival for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and is dedicated to Per Norgard on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Programme note It began with a dream, as it always does when I compose. I dreamt that I was standing in an open doorway on a hill in an otherwise open landscape. I do not know what was behind the door, but in front of it - towards the landscape - I saw my music disappearing. I stood looking for the music, and started to hear it, to remember it in time with its disappearance. The dream continued to recur as strange pictures in my daydreams, and I continued to try to write down the music that had vanished. It was also the dream that gave the piece its title- Exit Music. Exit Music is based on three simple songs (the songs that vanish through the doorway): a little lullaby, which continues to reappearin fragments; a strange polyphonic pop song that refers to a section of my opera Under the Sky; and a passionate little love song, which concludes the piece on the strings, very quietly and in unison. These simple songs are then constantly overpainted by enervating repeated motes in fairly simple rhythms, which push the songs out of the room. (Bent Sorensen).

This cool-sounding, minor-keyed jig uses only three basic 6/8 rhythms to give your students the confidence they need to navigate a too-often neglected time signature. Destined to become the go-to piece for teaching 6/8 to the young orchestra! (1:35) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

This entertaining medley, with its infectious driving rock feel throughout, brings together three pop favorites with a common thread: One Heart, from Céline Dion's hit album of the same name, Some Hearts, as sung by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, and Put a Little Love In Your Heart, Jackie DeShannon's early single which was also featured in the movie Scrooged. Audiences will love it and less experienced players will be amazed at how quickly they master the arrangement. It's a winner, written to help bring out the very best from your students and perfect for Valentine's Day. Don't miss it! (2:40).

Composed by Manuel de Falla during his lengthy residence in Paris, these three symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra are an expressive work bringing the southern Spanish gardens, which are laid out in the European and Arabic-Moorish tradition, to life. The influence of contemporary French music is noticeable in this composition. Despite many modifications, involving among other things, the scoring, number of movements, as well as layout and content, the basic idea of a nocturnal impression is retained from the outset. The work was finished - and likewise the orchestral material - only shortly before its premiere on 9 April 1916, which was a great success. World War I prevented its publication, though further performances followed, played then from manuscript material. The Urtext edition presented by Ullrich Scheideler takes as the main source the first edition of the score. The Critical Report gives detailed information about the source situation.
