Gloucestershire Wassail is associated with an English custom that was observed at Christmas time. A large, decorated bowl of spiced ale was hoisted through town by a group of carolers---Yule serenaders---in a tradition that has its roots in the beggars of the Middle Ages and Pagan festivals. The tune is therefore associated with Christmas revelry and joy. Gloucestershire Wassail probably dates from the 18th century, and is considered a traditional English tune.

This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar), rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing the melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his mother's death and the death of many of his friends who lost their lives in World War I. Saxophone Quartet was composed especially for presentation at the Montana Saxophone Festival and is dedicated to the festival's director, saxophonist Brooke Ferris. The first movement, Calliope, juxtaposes mechanized rhythmic patterns against legato, lyric melodies. The second movement, Chorale, explores homophonic, harmonic textures which alternate with lyric and contrapuntal passages, and was adapted from a short work composed for saxophone quartet in 1975. The last movement is a fugue.

Distant Variations is a one movement concerto (or more correctly, a concerto grosso) for saxophone quartet and wind orchestra. It was commissioned by the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester for Timothy Reynish and the RNCM Wind Orchestra for its first performance with the Apollo Saxophone Quartet at the Barbican in March 1997.

There is more light in this room when you are here is a fervently optimistic mood piece embodying the core themes of my song cycle The Lustful Mother. The title refers to another person - maybe a lover, child or friend - whose existence makes life more meaningful. In the first movement, the music wanders through the twilight, and the solitary recitation of the tenor sax is framed by answering sighs from the soprano and alto. In the second movement, the full quartet joins in the same hopeful song, that, endlessly swaying and discreetly circling, fills the whole space with its light. The work was commissioned by the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, to which it is dedicated.
