The opening movement of Bach's chorale cantata on Luther's In deepest need I cry to you BWV 38, which was composed for the 21st Sunday after Trinity Sunday, belongs to a group of cantatas whose opening choruses are not concertante but have been kept in the style of a motet; the instruments merely amplify the vocal parts. The archaic character of the movement is emphasized by the addition of a trombone quartet. An exciting recitative and an aria full of pungent harmonies is followed by an entirely unusual recitative in which the chorale melody forms the bass foundation for the vocal part. A second aria - which is no less unusual -is a trio which is only accompanied by the continuo; it leads into the concluding chorale which, pursuant to the 1st line of text Ob bei uns ist der Sunden viel, already begins with a brusque dissonance. In 1828 Berlioz wrote the Huit scènes de Faust. The work was soon withdrawn but almost twenty years later each of the eight scenes found a place in the Lgende dramatique La damnation de Faust dedicated to Franz Liszt. The first part of the Damnation exposes the figure of Faust and has an introductory nature. From the second part onwards, the course of action is largely based on Goethe’s drama.Contrasting characters and dramatic effect are of central importance in understanding Berlioz’s musical thought and his compositional process. Magic and fairy tale, incantations and ghosts, have been the ever-recurring themes of opera since the Baroque. It is precisely this fantasy in Berlioz's Faust, the “Opra de Concert en Quatre actsâ€, which comes very close to the spirit of Goethe's presentation.

The history of the genesis of the Requiem is entwined with legends and anecdotes. The burdens of the composition and performance of La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflote, and an acute infection led to the collapse and death of the composer following a short illness. Mozart left his wife in considerable debt. Constanze therefore turned to Mozart's friends, asking them to complete the fragment. After two failed attempts, the task passed to Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Sussmayr, who completed the Requiem in the form known today, using working materials that are no longer extant, and perhaps verbal instructions from the composer. Today the Sussmayr version is still the most well known, and it is doubtless the one with the closest historical ties to Mozart. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! This Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the first and most straightforward of four litanies which Mozart composed from 1771 to 1776 in Salzburg. The G major mass of Mozart followed a very special type of mass pattern, namely, that of the Missa pastoralis. In Mozart's time it was a widespread type of mass, especially in Bohemia and Italy, in which melodies and rhythms like those familiar from pastoral Christmas music were frequently found. Eberlin's programmatic setting of the offertory Terra tremuit was written for the festive liturgy of Easter Sunday at Salzburg Cathedral, which in the 17th and 18th centuries was a center of the cultivation of the polyphonic offertory. Verses 9 and 10 of Psalm 76 (Vulgata 75), with their vivid description of the earth trembling and falling silent are Eberlin's basis for the offertory. Eberlin depicts the earthquake by means of a written-out tremolo of the strings, and by staccato singing of the syllables of the word tremuit. The Requiem in B flat major is Johann Michael Haydn's second setting of the liturgical text of the Mass of the dead (another Requiem, MH 599, has since been identified as the work of Father Georg Pasterwiz) and it is also his last work, his Opus ultimum. On commission from Empress Maria Theresia he began the composition in 1805, but due to a serious illness he made only slow progress with the work. Like W. A. Mozart, he could not complete this Requiem. In 1839 Father Gunther Kronecker, Benedictine Father in the monastery of Kremsmunster in Upper Austria, completed the torso in the spirit and style of Haydn. The relatively unspectacular nature of the Spaur Mass may be one of the reasons for the fact that writers on music generally refer to it only as a peripheral work, a little sister of Mozart's important church works. With regard to scoring, the Spaur Mass belongs to the category of the missa solemnis, but its brevity and its stylistic character belong far more to the missa brevis. Unlike the Organ Solo Mass KV 259, here the soloistic element - both instrumental and vocal - is clearly integrated to the background in favour of the development of the whole ensemble. Just by reason of its scoring the Missa Sancti Hieronymi occupies a special place not only among the settings of the Mass by Haydn, but also in the repertoire of church music at the Royal Court of Salzburg. Here, as also in his earlier Litte Credo Mass KV 192, Mozart made use of a church music device which can be traced back in south-German and Austrian church music to the beginning of the 18th century: frequent repetition of the opening words of the Credo. This presupposes that the setting of the words of the intonation Credo in unum Deum as part of an ensemble composition, which for centuries had been intoned in plainsong by the priest, had become liturgically acceptable. It was only a small and syntactically logical step for the word Credo to be repeated before the individual articles of belief, thus strengthening the declaration of faith. Johann Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor heavily influenced W. A. Mozart's Requiem. In just two weeks Michael Haydn composed his work in December 1771, on the occasion of the death of his employer, Prince Bishop Sigismund Count Schrattenbach, who was beloved among the people and was a great patron of the arts. The work was written under the impression of personal tragedy: Haydn's only child, Aloisia Josepha, died in January 1771, before completing her first year of life. Parts of the Schrattenbach-Requiem were played together with the completed movements from his second, unfinished Requiem during his own furneral service. The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills.
