Should you be a fan of Messiaen, Castèréde's Sonatine is one for you. Having won prizes in piano, chamber music, harmony, composition, analysis and aesthetics in music whilst studying at Paris Conservatoire, it is not surprising that the composer's Sonatine for Trombone and Piano is full of musically appealing features. Liszt composed the Romance oubliee around 1844 for Piano. It was forgotten until he heard Violist Hermann Ritter at the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth. He fashioned for Ritter a transcription of the work for Viola and Piano as well as ones for the Piano, Violin and Violoncello. In this short work, the listener hears the agonies of a troubled soul, beginning with a rhapsodic passage, continuing with a cadenza-like section, then a section with arpeggiated figures, finally settling into a peaceful ending. This 4 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. With Mr. Sauer's arrangement we now have this lovely version for Trombone and Piano.

I've always been fascinated by the depth of expression in the song cycles of Robert Schumann, and have tried, in these two pieces, to emulate that using the trombone. Why the trombone? Well, it has a rich history of being 'paired' with the voice in choral music but, if I'm really honest, as a trumpet player I've always been a little bit envious of the trombone's lyrical elegance. The music, in both of these works, has a lot of 'dialogue' between the trombone and piano, I really did think of them as communicating - only without using words.

Alexander Scriabin's music has been described as mystical, lyrical and idiosyncratic. He was a most innovative and controversial early modern Russian composer. His works were ignored for many years until recently and are now seen as sincere expression(s) of genius.
The Three Etudes for Trombone and Piano are early works of Scriabin, originally written for solo Piano. They show lyricism, passion, moodiness, chromatic harmonies and great expression.
Mr. Sauer has once again brought three wonderful new works for advanced performers who wish to explore this area, largely unknown to the Trombone world. Those who do will be richly rewarded with the depth of musicanship found in these works.

Vocalise-etude (en forme de Habanera) was originally written for voice and is one more example of a French composer's fascination with the music of Spain. I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. I could feel that the story was emerging: a story born from within the music. - Anton GLADKIKH ; Hoffmanniada is a collection of six short pieces for trombone and piano composed in a style inspired by the great Russian composers of the twentieth century. Sometimes melancholic and romantic, sometimes cheerful and virtuoso, the writing subtlety of Anton Gladkikh perfectly exploits the qualities of power and finesse of both instruments. Fabrice MILLISCHERThis original piece is the first opus of FLEX Editions collection directed by Fabrice MILLISCHER.
