Following the successful format of the “Hymns We Love” series for piano, we’ve asked today’s top echelon of choral composers for a new setting of one of their favorite hymns. Further, we requested that it be developed with the smaller church choir in mind and be limited to a two-part mixed or SAB voicing format. We have also continued the unique feature of including notes from each composer explaining why this particular hymn ranks among their list of favorites, and how that may have influenced the musical style they chose. Not surprisingly, the result is a musically satisfying and diverse array of moods and styles providing a fresh look and feel to favorites from our cherished heritage of hymnody. This collection will be a welcome addition to the small-choir repertoire and is economically priced to fit into a smaller church choir budget as well. Don’t be surprised if this “Hymns We Love to Sing” collection becomes only the first of a choral collection series for small choirs!

I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce this new collection. The one-word title, Onward! is a call anyone can respond to, at any age. To quote Scottish singer Sir Harry Lauder, we can all 'keep right on to the end of the road'.

Most of the hymns were written between 2012 and 2015, some of which are hymn-style versions of biblical psalms or significant portions of a psalm, or in response to a verse of scripture. Some older texts have also been included, paired here for the first time with recently crafted tunes.

This collection also includes a previously unpublished song I co-wrote with my wife, Susan Heafield, a United Methodist pastor and musician. Praise Partners, our joint musical venture, has released two collections: We Can Be Messengers (Ref PP001) and Tell the Good News! (Ref PP003), both distributed by Stainer & Bell.

The word "hymn" comes from the Greek "hymnos", meaning a festive song.  To hymnologists (people who study hymns), the HYMN is the poetry, the lyrics, which is then set to a HYMN TUNE.  Many wonderful hymn tunes have been used over the centuries with several completely different sets of words.  The name of a hymn tune seldom matches the name of its hymn, and most people refer to hymns by their poetic names rather than their tune names.  However, some hymn tunes are so powerful, so flexible and so rooted in the collective social consciousness that they transcend whatever poetry is put with them.  Several tunes in this set have been used for many poems, most of which are unfamilar.  But we know the melody instantly!  Written for two violins and piano, both a viola and cello part are include to substitue for the 2nd violin.  Hymns (tunes) include: 1.
