Black Mast conjures images of a dramatic life on the high seas of a pirate captain and crew. The music is in minor with angular melodies and contrast created through changes in tempo. A maestoso presentation of the theme leads to a dramatic conclusion.Black Mast conjures images of a dramatic life on the high seas in the service of a pirate captain and crew. The work opens with a dramatic introduction, followed by the main theme at m. 9. At m. 17 a secondary theme related to the primary melody emerges; the primary theme reappears at m. 25 in the violas and cellos. A briskersecond theme, at a faster tempo, derived from the introduction emerges in m. 33. This second theme alternates with a lyrical courtly dance theme beginning in m. 45. This section reflects the non-combative aspects of life at sea and the joy of moving before the wind. At m. 73 the piece returns to the vigorous first theme andthe secondary theme from m. 17 leading to a dramatic, swashbuckling ending.Care should be taken to contrast the robust music of the primary themes and the more dance-like music of the middle section. I am privileged to be able to share this work with you and your students. I hope that it serves to both entertain and educate.—Peter TerryBluffton, Ohio 2016.

Much like Neil Hefti's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour (originally Basie Land). Set as a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been simplified a bit. 5-4-4-4.

Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1036400.

'I have always had a great fondness for the works by Schumann', Aribert Reimann once said. There exists a close relationship even beyond the music: As owner of Schumann's medical records from the mental asylum in Endenich, Reimann guarded the secret of the circumstances surrounding Schumann's last weeks and death. When the musical world celebrated Reimann's 70th birthday and commemorated the 150th anniversary of Schumann's death in 2006, Reimann decided to publish the records and comment on them in his book 'Robert Schumann in Endenich' (ED 9870).This book was presented to the public on 5 May 2006 at the Schumann Festival in Dusseldorf. For this occasion, as a musical bow to Schumann, Reimann composed the string quartet Adagio which the Heine Quartet premiered. Adagio is based on both Schumann's Endenich chorales 'Wenn mein Stundlein vorhanden ist' and 'Stark und Mittler, dein sind wir'.

Handel's Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278 enthralled London audiences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so today in concert halls and churches all over the world. It was performed for the first time in a festive service on 13 July 1713 in St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the Peace marking the end of the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession in 1713. The Te Deum was the first commission by the English royal house and was also Handel's first sacred work in the English language. For Handel the Utrecht Te Deum was an important milestone at the beginning of his London career. The composition brought him an annual pension from Queen Anne and helped him to establish himself as a composer of prestigious music for the English royal family. Four further settings of the Ambrosian hymn of praise by Handel followed, including the equally popular Dettingen Te Deum (Carus 55.238). The six soloists required can in practice be reduced to four, and the Te Deum does not contain any stand-alone arias. The chorus is scored in five parts in a few movements (SSATB), with the concluding doxology beginning in double-choir scoring (SST/AATB). For this frequently-performed work Carus offers a musical text reflecting the latest scholarly discoveries. The Critical Report contains information on all the important facts about the work in a practicable, compact form. A detailed foreword contains insights into the creation of the work and its reception. The vocal score, chorus score, and orchestral parts provide for the needs of practical performance; these are complemented by carus music, the choir app for practising the choral parts, as well as the Carus Choir Coach practice CDs and a Vocal Score XL in reader-friendly large print.

Max Bruch wrote his Concerto for two pianos in 1912 for an American piano duo, who only ever performed a cut down version. It was not until 1976 that the original version was released. The piano reduction by Wilhelm Bruckner-Ruggeberg is now available in this new edition and is also available with additional separate solo parts for both piano parts. Bruch's pianistic, powerful late arrival reflects echoes of Bach and Brahms.

Commissioned by Pennsylvania Unit of the International Association of Jazz Educators, a lighter-is-better attitude prevails in this medium-level release. Transparent voicings, creative rhythm section parts, and expandable solos for baritone (or alto) sax and piano are highlights. The trumpet and trombone sections contain five parts each; use of mutes enriches the overall color, and the flugelhorn doubles on all trumpet parts should be played if possible.
