What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxanes heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her is mistress. Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission. Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he cant bring himself to do so. Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters. Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christians death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxanes arms.

Sonatinas form a vital part of the teaching material for beginner and intermediate piano students. Compared to the great classic piano sonatas, they are technically and musically simpler and typically shorter. However, they still convey the basic elements of Classical style: the relation of melody to accompaniment, articulation, stylistically authentic playing, and correct interpretation. For the two volumes of Giraffe Piano, the most favoured and instructive of the sonatinas have been chosen. Volume 1 contains simpler pieces and Volume 2 is compromised of moderately difficult ones. Correct interpretation of the pieces is facilitated by added performance and fingeringmarks. Learning is helped along by clear presentation of the score, carefully placed page turns, and by inspiration from colour images showing the keyboard instruments of the 1720-1820 period for which the pieces were written. After a forceful, harmonically ambiguous section and a clear break in the music, the piece ends with a comforting decrescendo of reconciliation. It was commissioned by the Uppsala female choir “La Cappella†and is dedicated to its choral director Tony Margeta.“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings’ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard‘.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.“MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of “Carmenâ€, one of the most prominent womens’ vocal ensembles in Sweden.
