This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time. Mai 2000 in Pont-Saint-Martin statt.

Parisian violinist, Georges Catherine (1872-1958) compiles an exciting collection for the violin repertoire. The first solo from Vieuxtemp's Concerto No. 5 is clearly printed with a helpful key of unusual techniques. Vieuxtemp (1820-1881) was an Belgian composer and violinist. He composed a significant amount of string music, particularly for the violin, which remain popular in the advanced violinist's repertoire. The violin solo line of Concerto No. 5 makes use of extended techniques, including harmonics, bow techniques, aritculations and hand positions. Catherine's series, First Solos Extracted from the Classic Concertos provides essential access to significant repertoire of the violin, preparing advanced violinists for the major concertos.

On a tour of America in 1833 and 1834, the Franco/Flemish violin virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps heard Yankee Doodle. On returning to Europe, he produced the violin and piano barnburner that was the inspiration for this string orchestra arrangement. Everyone in the orchestra gets a crack at the melody and some alternate notes are provided for those with acrophobia. This is a must-have for those who enjoy programming patriotic music where the fireworks are in the string parts. (3:20).
