Esperanza - Eremitkrebs-Tango (1997) Hermit Crab Tango, Esperanza is part of Norgard's Animals in Concert, a suite of piano pieces, so far comprised of:  1. A Tortoise's Tango (1984) - dur.: 4'  2. The material could be, say, a number of song birds' equilibrist melodic lines, the overtones of the ocean surf, or waltzing themes by the schizophrenic artist Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930). Or again, as heard here, it can be the rhythms and motifs of the tango and a Beatles song (with bird), explored in three independent piano pieces that form the Animals in Concert suite, about which the composer writes:  Programme note for Animals in Concert:  1. Or again, as heard here, it can be the rhythms and motifs of the tango and a Beatles song (with bird), explored in three independent piano pieces that form the Animals in Concert suite, about which the composer writes:  “A Tortoise's Tango”: The tortoise as tango dancer must presumably possess certain rhythmic peculiarities, which I have chosen to express by letting the tune of the tortoise shuffle broadly, tripartite through the strict four partite time of tango.  Tortoise Tango was the original title of this piece, “written for Achilles” (the pianist Yvar Mikhashoff), for his so called tango project”, including new tangos for piano by composers from all over the world.  “Light of a Night (Paul meets bird)” was commissioned by pianist Aki Takahashi. It is a “reworked” arrangement for piano of the Beatles song ”Blackbird”. As some of us will recall, the Beatles on “The White Album” let the beautiful song to the blackbird be accompanied by an (apparently) live blackbird song. It is this authentic bird-motif world that in “Light of a Night” weaves itself into the Beatles melody and in turn is gradually infected by it, so that a completely new third entity ensues: a kind of Bird-rock ballad (or maybe it is a Beatle-bird?).  “Hermit Crab Tango (Esperanza)”: The tango situation is quite special for a Hermit Crab. It is a well-known fact that the hermit crab - this soft animal - must run the gauntlet among the many perils at the bottom of the sea when it must move hose. Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection.

In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered.

The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer.

Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) tunnetaan lähinnä lied-sävellyksistään, joita aktiivisina sävellysvuosina syntyikin satoja. Vähemmälle huomiolle ovat jääneet hänen instrumentaalisävellyksensä, mm. kuusi pianosonaattia, sellosonaatti, sarja gamballe ja pianolle sekä muutamat pikkukappaleet.

Vuodelle 1935 päivätty neliosainen, laajamuotoinen sonaatti viululle ja pianolle (op. 87) jäi keskeneräiseksi. Suomen Kansalliskirjaston Kilpinen-kokoelmassa oli useita luonnoksia ja eri versioita. Sonaatin osista neljäs oli keskeneräisin.

Viulutaiteilija Frida Backman tilasi konserttiaan varten sonaatin täydennöksen säveltäjä Walter Wolffilta. Hän sai työnsä päätöksen 2018, jonka jälkeen sonaatti kantaesitettiin.

Fennica Gehrmanin julkaisu on sonaatin ensipainos, ja siten laajentaa kuvaamme Yrjö Kilpisestä instrumenttiteosten säveltäjänä.

Ein ganz anderer (neuer?) Baur keine Bindung an einen cantus firmus, keine barocke Form stattdessen vier suitenartig, in lockerer Form aneinander gereihte Satze. Schon die Uberschriften deuten auf Neues; der Gesamt-Titel: Kaleidoskop die einzelnen Teile: Sisyphus, Spiegelung, Artisten, Marionetten; spielerisch frei entworfene Stucke, heiter, besinnlich, humorvoll. 1. Satz: Zwei thematische Bewegungen charakterisieren den Ablauf des Sisyphus eine durch Pausen unterbrochene einstimmige Rollfigur wechselt standig mit einem stereotypen Funfton-Ostinato einem Motiv, das in vielfacher Veranderung wiederkehrt und schliesslich girlandenformig in die Tiefe fallt, symbolisch fur das vergebliche Bemuhen der altgriechischen Sagengestalt. Das zweite Stuck, Spiegelungen, wird ein- und ausgeleitet durch einen melancholischen Gedanken; dieser mundet in einer Gruppe von statischen, streng imitierten, ineinander geschobenen Spiegelklangen. Eine bewegte Figur fuhrt zu einer 5/8-Periode, bei der die Oberstimme um funf Tone kreist; am Ende steht wieder die Spiegelklang-Episode, auf einem Einzelton verloschend: das Ganze ein ruhiges, fast aleatorisch wirkendes Intermezzo. 3. Satz: Eine virtuose Studie mit kreisenden Rastelli-Tongruppen, dodekaphonisch geordneten Quintolen, begleitet von rhythmisch gegenlaufigen Klangimpulsen, immer wieder unterbrochen von rezitativischen Pedal-Bass-Soli. Zum Ende, kraftvolle Zusammenballung aller thematischen Elemente eine artistische Toccata, gipfelnd in dissonanten Klangturmen. Das Finale: Marionetten, eine funfteilige Bruckenform ABCBA. Der Satz fugt sich aus drei thematischen Abschnitten zusammen; der erste: eine abwarts gerichtete Zwolfton-Melodie, in ein Klangfeld mundend, das sich zum vielschichtigen Akkord weitet; der zweite: ein verhulltes Menuett mit funftonigem Bass-Ostinato und marionettenhaft gezirkelten Bewegungen in Melodie und Begleitung; der dritte: ein in streng serieller Manier durchgefuhrter Abschnitt mit spiegel- und krebsformigen Entsprechungen. Formteil B und A schliessen sich als variierte Reprise an. Die Coda wird gebildet von dreifach geschichtetem Trillerfeld, der Zwolfton-Melodie des Anfangs und einer Kadenz mit drei Akkorden in tiefer Lage: ein stiller Ausklang des Kaleidoskops.
