This six-movement chorale cantata was first performed on 26 December 1724. The text is based on the Lutheran translation of the early Christian hymn A solis ortus cardinem. The outer movements frame two arias for tenor and bass, and two secco recitatives for alto and soprano. The first and sixth movements are in old-fashioned style, with four-part vocal writing and colla parte instruments. In the aria (movement 2) the tenor is accompanied by an obbligato oboe d'amore, and in the 4th and most striking movement, the three string parts accompany the bass. The demands on the singers, instrumentalists, and chorus are typical of a Bach cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3112100.

Christmas Prelude is a festive composition on the Christmas carol O Come, All Ye Faithful. A quiet, march-like introduction, representing the procession to worship, is followed by three verses of the well-known carol: once from a quartet, then shared between the various instrumental groups. A festively embellished section leads to an interlude symbolising the start of Christmas celebrations, before a spectacular conclusion. As the title suggests in Christmas Bells, bells play the leading part. This medley begins with bell chiming on the CD (this comes with the set), after which the band come in with a solid chord. During the short introduction, the bells still sound in the background. Following this sparkling introduction three well-known Christmas melodies are heard. Roland Kernen chose Kling Glöckchen klingelingeling, SüÃ?er die Glocken nie klingen and, of course, Jingle Bells! A fantasic work to end any Christmas concert.
