Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839; it appeared in 1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn's D Minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: “It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time; a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.†Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe (I stand with my open grave before me) BWV 156 is one of the few surviving cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach that is based on texts from the so-called Picander cycle. As in several other cantatas that use texts from this poet, Bach opens the work with a sinfonia, most likely taken from an earlier concerto that didn't survive and is later reused as the slow movement of the famous harpsichord concerto in F minor BWV 1056. In the first aria, the poet combines his text with a well-known chorale, a technique that is often found in Bach's cantatas, particularly those from the pre-Leipzig period. In 1866 Anton Bruckner composed his solemn Mass in E minor, which he revised extensively in 1876-1882. Composed for a performance in the open air, the work stands out among Bruckner's Masses and those of his contemporaries because of its scoring, omitting strings and organ in favor of an accompaniment for wind and brass instruments alone (Harmoniemusik). This scholarly-critical new edition of this second version takes into consideration for the first time the surviving parts from the Bruckner Archive at the St. Florian Monastery and the choral parts rediscovered in 2016 in the Linz Cathedral Choir Archive. In my sixth work for a string quartet, there is a very simple melody concealed in the background. That melody (distant voices) is played within an extremely slow tempo, and the notes which form the melody gain different textures by becoming disassembled, and played by different techniques. In our daily lives, our inner voices become concealed by our daily customs. The act of composing, tome, is to find out that concealed distant voices, make those voices spatialized and construct them within the musical time. This work is dedicated to Alois Lageder.
