Chopin wrote works for piano and orchestra between 1827 and 1832. They were written successively therefore there are traces of the gradual crystallisation and maturation of the composer's style. Their form and nature are dominated by the rules of the stile brillant, as well as the tendency to accent the national aspect. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form.

Variations, Nocturne & Finale On An English Sea-Song for Piano and Orchestra Op.60. Orchestral part arranged for a second Piano by David Lyon.
After a brief introduction to the Orchestra, the melody of an eighteenth century whalermen's ballad with verse and refrain 'Blow Ye Winds', is given out, the verse by the Piano, the refrain divided between Orchestra and Piano. Then follow thirteen variations, the last three being pianistic etudes, accompanied Orchestrally. The nocturne evokes the nostalgia of a long voyage and the finale the excitement, dangers and glory of a triumphant chase. In these movements, as well as in the variations, the entiremusical material is derived from the basic theme. The work is designed as a virtuoso concert-piece for the pianist, with supporting Orchestral flashes of colour and points of contrast.

This work by Kodaly's pupil Szelenyi, published here for the first time, might be seen as something approaching the Romantic piano concerto without orchestra. Even the Fugato in this work seems to point to the Romantic tradition, recalling as it does Liszt's Sonata in B minor. The varied interplay between dramatic and lyrical moods is richly inventive. This Concertino offers (young) piano soloists the opportunity to mount the podium as an aspiring virtuoso, accompanying a second part that demonstrates symphonic pretensions. The two players are evenly matched in musical terms in the dialogue between the two pianos.

Suite No. 1 is a hymn to the divinity of the dance. The piece explores all possibilities of extreme rhythm, harmony and orchestration in order to place special emphasis on the piano as a solo instrument with all its possibilities: from percussion instrument to lyric simplicity. At the end, the composer quotes the style of his scores together with the ancient tragedies in an epilogue with prominent signals from the wind section.

Igor Stravinsky's masterpiece Jeu de Cartes is now one of the standard works in the ballet repertoire and is also played more often as a purely concertante orchestral piece. Richard Rijnvos now transcribed the virtuoso piece for 2 pianos, keeping the individual orchestral parts and octaves precisely to maintain the complexity and expressiveness of the neoclassical original.

Igor Stravinsky originally wrote the Danses concertantes for a California-based entertainment orchestra. However, the five movementsare more than purely orchestral dances. The piece is reminiscent of a ballet suite. The two marches at the beginning and end mark the entrance (prologue) and departure (epilogue) of the dancers, with two of the middle movements - 'pas d'action' and 'pas de deux' obviously alluding to the ballet. The arrangement for two pianos by Ingolf Dahl is not just a reduction of the orchestral writing, but deliberately intended as an independent concert version.
