Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version.

With Adagietto Jacob de Haan demonstrates his ability to write in all kinds of styles. A sense of pure calm emanates from the flowing main melody. The tasteful orchestration fully supports the harmonic suspense as the piece progresses towards a fantastic climax at the end.

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close. Adornia is a word invented by the composer with a similar meaning as ‘to adorn’, which means 'to embellish'. The thematic cornerstones are DORN, after the commissioning band CMV Juliana in Doornspijk, Netherlands. It also contains the chorale ‘Schmücke dich, du liebe Seele’ used several times in different variations. Adornia contains beautiful melodies, broad dynamic passages and has a spectacular conclusion.

The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody.

Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. De Haan has compiled a list of suggested poems to be read, but other poems may be selected that better fit the occasion. Dances & Sonnets is a dramatic and truly special piece! Dances and Sonnets propone un’introduzione maestosa.

Dreaming of love. This is the theme of the folksong on which the composition was based. Its characteristic melody inspired Jacob de Haan to this instrumental romance with a transparent structure consisting of an introduction, the folk-melody, a development of the theme, the folk-melody accompanied by ornamental triplets followed by the final bars.
