In creating the African American ecumenical hymnal, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism it was imperative to the core committee that the hymnal serve as a needed resource for the many denominations in the African American Church. It was the committee’s strong desire that this hymnal would represent and preserve the rich theological, cultural, and musical heritages of these traditions and offer a full breadth of music representing historical as well as vibrant contemporary worship, while looking toward the future. It was also of utmost importance that this hymnal draw the body of Christ together so that it may be enlarged, enriched, and inspired to live and worship based on what unites us: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.†This hymnal contains selections of diverse styles and genres, including traditional ecumenical hymns, contemporary texts written for the twenty-first-century church, praise and worship selections, music from Taizé, choral responses, responsorial psalmody, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and Negro spirituals. The editors maintained a remarkably high degree of excellence in selecting and presenting this repertoire, and church musicians of all tastes could find this anthology useful either as a reference or as a repository for imaginitive congregational song. Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the ‘Siena Wind Orchestra’. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy ‘one tone fanfare’. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C D E flat B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

ISBN 9783765103834. 6.5 x 9.5 inches.
Hanns Eisler's film music has been a subject of increasing interest in recent years, in the context of significant new source materials and DVD editions as well as innovative scholarly approaches to music and film. Whereas Eisler's reputation as a film composer was previously defined by the book Composing for the Films, written in collaboration with Theodor W. Adorno, it is now his 40-odd film scores themselves which are the object of detailed investigation. The present collection of essays covers a wide range of films, from Niemandsland (1931) to Esther (1962). The twelve authors from Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, Spain, and the USA employ wide-ranging approaches to film music analysis in their treatment of the subject, while also considering the question of the extent to which Eisler actually fulfilled his own theoretical demands. It is not surprising that the authors of the third Eisler Studien have come up with refreshingly diverse and highly rewarding results.

Enter the Olympians honors the competitive spirit. Although intended primarily for concert use, it can be used to honor teams and individual competitors everywhere. While composer in residence of the Meet The Composer Louisville Residency, I was commissioned to create a new score for the twenty-plus middle school bands of the Jefferson County Public School System. The work was to be appropriate for widely diverse bands: interesting to advanced students, yet accessible to less advanced students or bands with limited instrumentation. For interest, Enter the Olympians uses pedal tones with harmonies suspended above them, canonic fanfare motives, other harmonies not common at this grade level, and a mid-section that features the lower instruments playing the melody. The work's repetition of essential materials and its secure scoring style broaden its accessibility. Ensemble instrumentation: 8 Flute, 2 Oboe, 6 Bb Clarinet 1, 6 Bb Clarinet 2, 2 Bb Bass Clarinet, 5 Eb Alto Saxophone, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 4 Bb Trumpet 1, 4 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 F Horn, 3 Trombone 1, 7 Trombone 2, Euphonium, and Bassoon, 2 Euphonium T.C., 4 Tuba, 2 Timpani, 2 Percussion 1 (Glockenspiel), 3 Percussion 2 (Snare Drum, Bass Drum), 3 Percussion 3 (Crash Cymbal, Suspended Cymbal).
