Richard Wagner und sein Werk bedeuten nicht nur ein grosses, sondern auch ein fragwurdiges Erbe, fragwurdig im alten ursprunglichen wie im heute gebrauchlichen Sinne dieses Wortes. Vor allem diese Fragwurdigkeit ist es, die eine Auseinandersetzung mit Wagner rechtfertigt oder sogar fordert. Nun gibt es ja seit mehr als hundert Jahren den Streit zwischen Wagnerianern und Antiwagnerianern. Ein derartiges emotionsgeladenes Pro oder Contra ist hier jedoch nicht gemeint. Vielmehr soll gezeit werden, dass es ausser kritikloser Glorifizierung und ebenso kritikloser, weil blinder Verdammung einen dritten Weg gibt, den namlich der nuchtern-sachlichen Betrachtung, in der zunachst eeinaml die Fakten, die uberprufbaren Daten den Massstab bilden. Von der bisherigen riesigen Literatur uber Wagner beruht freilich nur ein verschwindend geringer Teil auf tatsachlicher Forschung. Es gibt jedoch inzwischen eine Wagnerforschung, die diesen Namen wirklich verdient. Ihre Ergebnisse sollen hier nicht nur prasentiert, sondern zugleich zur Diskussion gestellt und mit dem herrschenden Bewusstsein konfrontiert werden - in der Hoffnung, dass dieses Bewusstsein sich dort, wo es notig ist, wandelt.

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarchâ€. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances†marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.
