A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

I was introduced to William Blake's poem The Lamb many years ago through John Tavener's famous setting and, when commissioned by York Minster to write a carol for their 2019 nine lessons and carols services, the idea of writing my own setting of this beautiful poem was hard to resist. For me, the biblical symbol of the lamb represents one of the most profound theological mysteries. That divine omnipotence as represented by the symbolic lamb speaks volumes of the humility and self-sacrificing nature of God; complexity illustrated in simplicity. The poet has seen within the vulnerability of the lamb, the profundity of God's self-sacrifice. I looked to convey the innocence of the lamb through the gentle opening of the piece with its simple melody and harmony. The harmonies gradually intensify as the questions of the text continue, and there is a stronger feel to the second verse as those questions begin to be answered and it is revealed that the Creator God is Himself the Lamb. A feeling of space should prevail, without the tempo dragging. The commas in bars 29, 33, 46, 51 and 52 imply there should be room to breathe, but not a whole quaver's worth of breath if possible.

This Dohanyi setting became a classic many years ago. It is a stunning festival piece for concert or worship. Originally written for organ, this version provides a piano accompaniment that functions on its own, but is actually a reduction of a robust new orchestration. Composed in the 1930's, the character of the piece is 20th century romanticism: classical and lush.

Similar in concept to its predecessor, The Living Last Supper (55/1110L), this unique presentation of the Christmas story is seen through the eyes of those who witnessed the first Christmas in Bethlehem many years ago. There are brief monologues for ten characters--ranging from Mary and Joseph to members of the Innkeeper's family--interspersed among the seven songs. (Also included are character descriptions, set and staging suggestions, and hints for wardrobe and props). The music is Ruth Elaine Schram at her best: beautiful melodies, thoughtful texts, well-crafted part writing-and includes familiar carols with possible congregational participation. The optional orchestration demands are modest, making it possible for the use of live instruments even on a limited budget. An Accompaniment CD is also available, if desired. The Living Light is flexible and accessible enough to appeal to and be within the capabilities of most music ministry programs.

In 2011, Barbara Garrop, my mother, commissioned me to write a piano trio in memory of Norman Garrop, my father, who passed away about thirty years ago. When I started brainstorming about topics for the piece, I found it difficult to recall many moments of my early life involving my father. Too many years had passed, and the memories that I could summon were of achild looking up to her father, not an adult relating to an equal. However, while collecting stories of my father from various family members, along with discovering a number of objects that had once belonged to him and that I had stored away in boxes decades ago, I began to realize that this piece wasn't so much about my father as it was about my re-discovering the man that he was: a loving husband and dad who cared deeply about his family and his passions (which included bike riding, collecting coins, strumming our guitar, playing baseball, watching football games, entertaining people, helping to run local theater and puppet productions, and carving objects out of wook); an accountant who dreamed of a better future: a treasurer of our local synagogue; an early advocate for computers (we owned an Apple II+); and a pranster with a great sense of humor. Ultimately, I decided to musically tell the story of my search for these memories. In the first movement (Without), a child calls out in a sing-song voice, searching for her lost parent. This search intesifies over the course of the movement through a series of themes, including a stepping motif in which a two-note progression steadily climbs higher, a pseudo-jewish folksong, and a passionate longing theme. The child's search becomes increasingly intense throughout the movement, calling out fervently and repeatedly to the parent; the movement ends in a moment of great tnesion and uncertainty. The second movment (Within) quietly opens with the lost parent finally answering, represented by a solo cello; the child (now personified by the violin) has found the parent within the sanctuary of her own heart. This movement highlights the joy and solemnity of this beautiful discovery. -S.G.

Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. The light from distant stars takes eons to reach our eyes, connecting us with an ancient past. Many elements that comprise our bodies were cast out of stars million years ago. Since we are the stuff of stars, where will we cast our own light? Whose world will we impact? Harmonically, the piece seeks to evoke the vastness and mystery of space, simultaneously capturing the intimacy of connection. Stars Legacies of light Ages ago, you spun light into the bleak Ancient light falls on my eye And I? A star sacred stellar dust casting light out through time In whose sky will my light fall?  .Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. The light from distant stars takes eons to reach our eyes, connecting us with an ancient past.
