Brass Band - Grade 2.5 SKU: BT.GOB-000958-030 Composed by Peter Martin. Arranged by Menno Haantjes. Set (Score & Parts). 5 pages. Gobelin Music Publications #GOB 000958-030. Published by Gobelin Music Publications (BT.GOB-000958-030). Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding.
I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is Cock O' the North a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text.
Auntie Mary, had a canary, Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers.
II. The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go.
You'll take the high road And I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond
III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as Marie's Wedding '. Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds. Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others).
Step we gaely, on we go, heel for heel and toe for toe Arm and arm and on we go, all for Marie's wedding

Chamber Music Viola 1, Viola 2, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.11441...(+)
Chamber Music Viola 1, Viola 2, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.11441690S String Quartet No. 3. Composed by Shulamit Ran. Sws. Contemporary. Full score. With Standard notation. Composed March 9 2013. 32 pages. Duration 23 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-41690S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.11441690S). UPC: 680160626021. 9 x 12 inches. Ran's third string quartet was written for the Pacifica Quartet, who are featuring it in numerous performances from May 2014 through February 2016, across the country and abroad. Their blog page dedicated to the work also features the composer's notes, for more indepth insight. ...impassioned solos emerge from ominous quiet, and high arpeggios in the violins quiver alongside the earthy cello. Ms. Ran skillfully deploys these extremes of color, volume and pitch, yet the overall somewhat chilly impression is one of poise. -- Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times. My third string quartet was composed at the invitation of the Pacifica Quartet, whose music-making I have come to know closely and admire hugely as resident artists at the University of Chicago. Already in our early conversations Pacifica proposed that this quartet might, in some manner, refer to the visual arts as a point of germination. Probing further, I found out that the quartet members had special interest in art created during the earlier part of the 20th century, perhaps between the two world wars. It was my good fortune to have met, a short while later, while in residence at the American Academy in Rome in the fall of 2011, art conservationist Albert Albano who steered me to the work of Felix Nussbaum (1904-1944), a German-Jewish painter who, like so many others, perished in the Holocaust at a young age, and who left some powerful, deeply moving art that spoke to the life that was unraveling around him. The title of my string quartet takes its inspiration from a major exhibit devoted to art by German artists of the period of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) titled “Glitter and Doom: German Portraits from the 1920sâ€, first shown at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006-07. Nussbaum would have been a bit too young to be included in this exhibit. His most noteworthy art was created in the last very few years of his short life. The exhibit’s evocative title, however, suggested to me the idea of “Glitter, Doom, Shards, Memory†as a way of framing a possible musical composition that would be an homage to his life and art, and to that of so many others like him during that era.  Knowing that their days were numbered, yet intent on leaving a mark, a legacy, a memory, their art is triumph of the human spirit over annihilation. Parallel to my wish to compose a string quartet that, typically for this genre, would exist as “pure musicâ€, independent of a narrative, was my desire to effect an awareness in my listener of matters which are, to me, of great human concern.  To my mind there is no contradiction between the two goals.  As in several other works composed since 1969, this is my way of saying ‘do not forget’, something that, I believe, can be done through music with special power and poignancy.   The individual titles of the quartet’s four movements give an indication of some of the emotional strands this work explores. 1) “That which happened†(das was geschah) – is how the poet Paul Celan referred to the Shoah – the Holocaust.  These simple words served for me, in the first movement, as a metaphor for the way in which an “ordinary†life, with its daily flow and its sense of sweet normalcy, was shockingly, inhumanely, inexplicably shattered. 2) “Menace†is a shorter movement, mimicking a Scherzo.  It is also machine-like, incessant, with an occasional, recurring, waltz-like little tune – perhaps the chilling grimace we recognize from the executioner’s guillotine mask.  Like the death machine it alludes to, it gathers momentum as it goes, and is unstoppable. 3) â€If I must perish - do not let my paintings dieâ€; these words are by Felix Nussbaum who, knowing what was ahead, nonetheless continued painting till his death in Auschwitz in 1944.  If the heart of the first movement is the shuddering interruption of life as we know it, the third movement tries to capture something of what I can only imagine to be the conflicting states of mind that would have made it possible, and essential, to continue to live and practice one’s art – bearing witness to the events.  Creating must have been, for Nussbaum and for so many others, a way of maintaining sanity, both a struggle and a catharsis – an act of defiance and salvation all at the same time. 4) “Shards, Memory†is a direct reference to my quartet’s title.  Only shards are left.  And memory.  The memory is of things large and small, of unspeakable tragedy, but also of the song and the dance, the smile, the hopes. All things human.  As we remember, in the face of death’s silence, we restore dignity to those who are gone.—Shulamit Ran . $29.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra String Orchestra - Medium Easy/Medium SKU: CF.CAS22 Composed by Larry Clark. Carl Fischer Concert String Orchestra Series. Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 12 pages. Carl Fischer Music #CAS22. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.CAS22). ISBN 9780825858208. UPC: 798408058203. 8.5 X 11 inches. Key: G major. The fast paced rondo has a Dorian flavored melody with hints of quartel (based on an interval of a fourth) harmony to give it a contemporary sound The players are presented with solo opportunities as well as harmonic turns and twists that will keep them. Rondo in the Nick of Time was originally the third movement for a woodwind quintet piece that I wrote in 1990. I have always been fond of this little piece and felt that it would adapt well to larger ensembles. I have also scored this piece for band as part of a suite called Upon a New Horizon. The main theme is based on the Dorian Mode. The use of quartal harmony makes up most of the harmonic material. Each statement of the theme is followed by an episode that increases in length each time. There is a sudden change of style and tempo in the middle of the piece, where fragments of the theme are developed. The title is a play-on-words, since the work contains hemiola effects that alter the feel of the time.As with all of my pieces for strings, the bowings are given only as a reference. Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner. Orchestra SKU: SU.32040140 For Orchestra. Composed by Amy Riebs Mi...(+)
Orchestra SKU: SU.32040140 For Orchestra. Composed by Amy Riebs Mills. Orchestra. Full Score. Subito Music Corporation #32040140. Published by Subito Music Corporation (SU.32040140). 2222; 4331; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2016 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC Like a modern Pictures at an Exhibition…. Ha Shamayim is an original piece for orchestra that was inspired by photographs taken by the Hubble space telescope. Each section is inspired by one photo; the title of each section is the title that NASA gave to the photograph. The words Ha Shamayim are Hebrew for The Heavens. They are written in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The words are also seen in Psalm 19. Section I: Warped Edge-On Galaxy ESO 510-G13 The piece begins in outer space with its glistening stars. Glissandi are used to depict the strange but beautiful warp seen in the photograph. Section II: Galaxy Fires at Neighboring Galaxy Suddenly the piece erupts as one galaxy fires blue gas at its neighbor. They engage in a cosmic battle. Section III: Youthful-looking Galaxy May Be an Adult The adolescent galaxy is personified by a humorous, gawky melody reminiscent of teenage boys who walk on feet that are still too big. Occasionally there is an argument with an authority figure, but the joy of exploring the universe quickly returns. Section IV: Star Birth in Galaxy M83 The dramatic photograph looks like a womb with veins. The music begins on one note, then it begins to explore the initial swelling and stretching. It morphs into an energetic fast theme, still growing. Ultimately it becomes glorious and expansive, like the new star. Section V: String of ‘Cosmic Pearls’ Surrounds an Exploding Star The first theme is a happy circle dance inspired by the circle of white dots in the photograph. The second theme is noble and joyful. It is reminiscent of the melody in the famous chorus in Haydn’s The Creation with the words from Psalm 19, The heavens are telling the glory of God. The music then has flashbacks to the earlier sections, and ends in triumph. The five sections in Ha Shamayim are continuous with no breaks. Goethe, who studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768 (a period he wrote about in Dichtung und Wahrheit), was friends there with a young man of his age, Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf, the grandson of the publishing house's founder. Breitkopf set his friend's first poems to music in the style of the day. The Neue Lieder und Melodien came out for the 1770 Leipzig spring fair, though without any mention of the poet, still completely unknown at that time. The title Goethes Leipziger Liederbuch dates only from 1932, when Gunter Raphael prepared a new edition for the Goethe commemorative year. Since several poems from the Neue Lieder are found in highly altered forms in later work collections, this publication of Goethe's first poems is also of great value to literary scholars.

Piano Quintet SKU: BR.EB-9399 Hommage a Schubert. Composed by Chri...(+)
Piano Quintet SKU: BR.EB-9399 Hommage a Schubert. Composed by Christian Mason. Chamber music; stapled. Edition Breitkopf. Music post-1945; New music (post-2000). Score and parts. Composed 2020. 72 pages. Duration 15'. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 9399. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-9399). ISBN 9790004188736. 9 x 12 inches. One of my favourite pieces of music as a child - and I still love it - was Schubert's Trout Quintet. It was partly the wonderful music, of course, so light-hearted and joyful on the surface, yet with twists and turns and murky depths of feeling too. But I also liked the picture of a trout on the album sleeve - such beautiful creatures! Last year, while resident at the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, as I took daily walks along the Regnitz river, I observed the trout as they calmly hovered and swayed in the shallows... But if they felt my shadow they were gone in a split second! If you ever get a chance to look closely at brown trout you see that they are covered in myriad brown/red spots of varied sizes; camouflage I suppose. Now those patterns seem to be mixing in my mind with the shifting colours of the spectral arpeggios that flow through this little piece. It's a watery piece, with rippling waves, shimmering surfaces and textural veils around the melodies which flow through it. But it also takes inspiration (and it's title) from a Pablo Neruda poem: the third stanza of Every Day You Play includes the line The sky is a net crammed with shadowy fish. There's no singer, but I imagine an invisible or imaginary voice somewhere behind (or beyond) the music, and so the score includes a melodic setting of the text. Even though this is not performed by a voice, the melody is always played by the ensemble - especially high register cello - making the piece something like the inverse of a song without words. (Christian Mason)

Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1125039-140). 9x12 inches. English-German-French-Dutch. Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettes’) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy. For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time. The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.
$45.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday-afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. The opening of the piece sets the scene with danger and desperation. By m. 6, our hero is making his way on horseback to rescue the fair maiden. This main melody is developed and passed around the ensemble until m. 36, at which point despair sets in. The music is rich with romantic harmonies and inner lines. Be sure to bring out these inner lines to add to the passion and drama of the moment. It continues to build until a thunderous arrival at m. 49. From there we return to our hero, who is now getting close to the train tracks to save the fair maiden. The tension becomes the highest at m. 61, when we are still not sure if our hero will make it in time. But alas, at m. 68 he swoops in to save the day and rescue the fair maiden. Of course, they live happily ever after. My hope is that your ensemble will have some fun with this style of music. It was adapted from an arrangement I wrote for the new pipe organ at the Walk Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They wanted some scary train music to show children how the organ was used back before movies had sound. Strings provide a heightened sense of drama with this genre of music. The following is a remembrance by the composer: Under the picture in my high school yearbook it said, Silence is golden. Lost my diploma on the way home from graduation but I knew what I wanted to be: A Big Band Pianist. Started hanging out in Manhattan on Fifty Second Street. There were seven jazz clubs in one block, between Sixth and Seventh. Couldnt drink at seventeen, so just nursed cokes at a dollar each. My salary was twenty a week. Sat by the great Art Tatum, the incredible blind pianist. My teacher accompanied Billie at the Onyx. Later, Dizzy and Bird appeared on the scene. But, find them I did: in the States and even on some Pacific Islands. Sometimes you could even recognize what you were playing. Sometimes, had to kick someone off the bench. I told Kim Rich, the poet, my stories and somehow she made these wonderful lyrics with just a few phone conversations. Hey!
