The rediscovery of the original manuscripts of Max Reger's works for violin, viola and violoncello op. 131a-d in the Prague Conservatory Library represents a small sensation. These late works for solo strings dating from 1914 and 1915, the last of which appeared only posthumously, were previously known only from their first prints. The three duosop. 131b for two violins were composed within a few days, shortly after Easter 1914; it is particularly in this case that access to Reger's autograph is of great value in terms ofproviding insight into the genesis of the works.

The three Duetti op. 20 reflect the highly developed taste of Viennese audiences around 1800. They are varied, exciting and colourful, technically balanced and of intermediate difficulty. This also makes them excellent study material for advanced pupils.

One of EMB s most successful composers and publishers, And-rás Soós, has devoted his latest volume to a special instrumental ensemble: three violins. No original works appear in it, in this collection, which aims at variety, we find transcriptions of choral works and piano and guitar pieces, etc. from the 14th to the 19th century. The main consideration in selecting the works was that the score should offer young violinists real chamber music, that is, if possible three equally important parts should share in the music-making.Für ein spezielles Instrumentalensemble, drei Violinen, stellte einer unserer erfolgreichsten Komponisten-Herausgeber, András Soós, seinen neuesten Band zusammen.

Nicola Mestrino (1748-1789) was employed for a time in the Esterházy court orchestra under the direction of Joseph Haydn. He later settled in Paris and became one of the most celebrated violin virtuosos of the period. He was also a composer, and one of his most successful works was this set of three violin duets which was published in no fewer than four contemporary editions in Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam and the German city of Offenbach. In these duets consisting of either three or two movements, the two violins have absolutely equal roles.

Béla Bartók planned in 1939 to arrange for two violins and three violins his choral works (for egual voices). He was prevented from doing this by his early death. At the request of the Editio Musica Budapest, Endre Szervánszky has undertaken this task in 1971. His arrangements, which we are bringing out in two volumes, offer valuable material both to violin teaching and group music-making.

As far as we know Vivaldi wrote twenty trio sonatas. Several of these works are actually for two parts, as the continuo merely doubles one of the two solo instruments. In the titles of four of these trio sonatas ('Suonata da camera, a 2 violini anco senza basso se piace', meaning if desired the sonata can be played without the bass part) Vivaldi himself gave his approval to the omission of the third instrument. In the light of this, the present publication gives the four works in the form of violin duos.We recommend these three-movement sonatas, in a fast-slow-fast format, for violinists who are already advanced in their studies. 1. Sonata RV 702. Sonata RV 713. SonataRV 684. Sonata RV 77.

The study in synchronicity, se sont penches dessus first achieved its final scoring after many changes. It was first composed as music to a choreography by Gabriel Hernandez: Le (!). eh ? Zovotrimaserovmeravmerouvian (dmzn !) ; se sont penches dessus, which is based on the letters of a fragment translated into French that appears in James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. The short, static piece has existed in three versions: 1. - sspd , electronic music (normal version, a glissando from one chord of four sounds to another, employed in the electronics of No. 3) 2. - sspd sature, electronic music (intentionally distorted version of No. 1) 3. - se sont penches dessus for violin, alto flute and electronics, in which the flutist had to sing one tone of a diad It turns out that a version for two equal string instruments can better render the harmony of the piece (a tone sung simultaneously with a tone that is played on the flute yields a ring-modulated mixture of sound which is too indistinct), and thus the duo version for 2 violins was composed. A collaboration with the Kairos Quartet, Berlin, (le second tour du noye, 3rd String Quartet) led me to smuggle a viola and cello into the piece as background, in order to glue the abrupt harmonic changes discretely together. The Duo and the Quartet are definitive and equally valid versions, both of which are available separately: Duo (Carus 16.327/10), Quartet (Carus 16.327). se sont penches dessus is now literally the transposition of the translated quotation from James Joyce, in which the letters of the text se sont penches dessus establish the basic structure of the piece (the rhythmic standstill denotes the vowels of the 4 words), the letters of Zovotrimaserovmeravmerouvian indicate the fine rhythmic structure and the manner of playing (e.g., sul ponticello). Walter Feldmann. Score available separately - see item CA.1632700.
