Max Reger’s setting of Psalm 100 is one of the “grand style” choral-symphonic works of the classical modern repertoire. Contrapuntal skill in the tradition of Bach combines with overwhelmingly powerful expressiveness, rich in contrasts. The full harmonic and stylistic breadth of the early 20th century sings out, not only in frenetic song, but also in the search for awareness in quieter passages. Reger’s opulence, tonal and contrapuntal almost throughout, finally culminates in a double fugue with an off-stage orchestra similar to the trumpets of Jericho over “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott”. The composer’s declared aim was: “The psalm must go so brilliantly, that all will be simply ’bowled over‘.”.

Reger's cantata for Good Friday, based on the famous Passion hymn by Paul Gerhardt, was composed in 1904 and belongs to a group with 4 further choral cantatas - Reger's independent and most comprehensive contribution to a key family of protestant church music. The Carus edition of these works is intended to make Reger's choral cantatas accessible for musical practice and musicological reasearch for the first time in a modern critical edition. Reger composed Palmsonntagmorgen (WoO VI/18) at the beginning of 1902 at the request of the Chemnitz organist and choral director Georg Stolz. Stolz may also have suggested the text by Emanuel Geibel. The division of the text into sections, and the imitative and chordal passages in the five-part unaccompanied setting already point towards Reger's later motets.

Reger's unaccompanied setting Maria, Himmelsfreud (WoO VI/12) was probably composed at the end of 1899 to a commission from the Regensburg Cathedral music director Franz Xaver Engelhart for the collection Marienlob, which he edited. All four verses of the well-known text by Heinrich Bone were set by Reger here, in contrast to his setting of the same name from the Marienlieder op. 61d.
