A soft motif repeats on other intervals in many voices leading to a rhythmic development section with sharp brass accents and quick woodwind runs. A beautiful melodic trumpet solo begins the next lyrical section which returns to a full recapitulation of the contrapuntal material.

The Warriors is a processional march suitable for festival performances or ceremonial purposes, such as a graduation. Written in the style of the noted English composers of the early 20th century, this piece could be a good introduction to the more involved works of Holst, Vaughan Williams, Jacob or Grainger.

Jingle Bells is a Christmas hit known all over the world, so why not play it in some diverse global styles? This was Konrad Koselleck's initial thought when he began working on this arrangement. The opening takes us straight into a Disney movie, then some Irish flutes invite you to take a sleigh ride somewhere up north in Lapland. Down by the river Volga, a Russian hero sings a ballad and a complete Rimsky-Korsakov orchestra answers. A harp invites you for a French waltz a la Ravel . . . or is it Strauss? Thereafter a Bavarian polka sets the right tempo to finish the song, sounding like a Big Band with a boulevard of Hollywood strings before Rudolf leaves us with a last farewell. Arranged for full orchestra.

Quirks—a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action—demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character. The music vacillates between fast and slow, happy and sad, extroverted and introverted, and just never goes where you expect. There is plenty of interplay between winds and percussion as the four and three notes of the main motive are tossed about the many instrumental colors. This is a tour-de-force, destined to become a band standard for more advanced bands. You must give this a careful listen.

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but “lyric scenesâ€. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise. After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.
