Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

Guardians of the Waves werd geschreven in opdracht van de Japan Coast Guard Band ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest, in 2018. De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Het werk, dat is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm, begint met een korte introductie die het hoofdthema inleidt, dat aanvankelijk wordt gespeeld door het koper en dan wordt herhaald met een weelderige discant in hethout. Het thema wordt voortgezet en gaat over in een tweede thema, eerst tutti gespeeld en rustig herhaald door fagot, tenorsax en eufonium. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt. Dieses wird zunächst von den Blechbläsern gespielt und dann von den Oberstimmen in denHolzbläsern mit Verzierungen wiederholt. Das Thema wird erweitert und geht in ein zweites Thema über, das zunächst vom Tutti gespielt und dann von Fagott, Tenorsaxophon und Euphonium leise wiederholt wird. Anschließend erklingteine traditionelle Melodie in den Bassinstrumenten, die mit unterschiedlicher Begleitung zweimal gespielt wird. Es folgt ein ruhigeres Trio, das zart besetzt ist und die Tenorinstrumente des Blasorchesters hervorhebt. Dies wirdschließlich vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgegriffen und führt zu einer Wiederholung der Einleitung und einer Rückkehr zu den beiden Hauptthemen, die in einen triumphalen Schluss überleiten.

Guardians of the Waves est une commande de l’Harmonie de la Gendarmerie maritime du Japon pour marquer son 30e anniversaire, en 2018. L’orchestre a créé l’œuvre dans le cadre d’un concert d’anniversaire le 8 novembre decette même année. Écrite en forme de marche traditionnelle, Guardians of the Waves s’ouvre avec une courte introduction qui mène au thème principal, interprété d’abord par les cuivres puis repris avec un déchant fleuri parles bois. Le thème est prolongé et se morphe en un second thème, d’abord en tutti, puis répété doucement par les bassons, saxophones ténor et euphoniums. Ce passage mène une mélodie conventionnelle dans les graves, jouée deuxfois avec divers accompagnements. Vient ensuite un trio plus calme, orchestré avec délicatesse et mettant en avant les instruments ténor. Repris par l’orchestre entier, ce passage est suivi d’un rappel de l’introduction avant unretour aux deux thèmes principaux, qui mènent une conclusion triomphale.

Salute to the Victor is in traditional march form and contains, as a tribute to Victor Grieve who was a devotee of English music (in particular that of Sir Edward Elgar), a short quote from Elgar’s Sea Pictures in the trio. Salute tothe Victor was commissioned by Helen, Alex and James Grieve for the Golden Kangaroos (Hornsby Concert Band) from Sydney, Australia, in memory of their parents, Louise and Victor Grieve, Founder and Director.

A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated inthe ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. 'Klezmer' is a Yiddish termcombining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned bythe ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations.

Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people.

Litouwen, de grootste van de drie Baltische staten, is gezegend met een rijk cultureel erfgoed. Componist Jacob de Haan heeft The Heart of Lithuania gebaseerd op vijf volksmelodieën die met name geliefd waren in de tweede helftvan de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel alle vijf de liederen afkomstig zijn uit de Auk¹taitija-regio, zijn ze populair in heel Litouwen, ze worden nog altijd gezongen door jonge mensen in de steden en dorpen. La Lituanie est dotée d’un riche patrimoine culturel. Petit territoire situé sur la rive orientale de la mer Baltique, la Lituanie est divisée en cinq régions ethnographiques : la Samogitie, la Haute Lituanie, la Sudovie, la Dzūkija et la Petite Lituanie. Chaque région a son dialecte, son costume traditionnel, ses coutumes, son artisanat, ses fêtes et jours fériés et surtout ses propres chants traditionnels chantés depuis près d’un millénaire. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanie”), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui. Le choix des chants et la diversité des émotions qu’ils expriment travers des lignes mélodiques typées emportent l’auditeur au cœur de l’ me lituanienne.

Fanfare for Korea was commissioned by the first Korea International Concert band Festival, which took place in 2010, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In this triumphant fanfare, composer Jacob de Haan uses the melody of Arirang, the most popular folk song in Korea. The Korea Festival Concert band performed the première at the festival, conducted by de Haan himself.

Fanfare for Korea is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het eerste Korea International Wind Band Festival. Dit festival vond plaats in 2010. Zestig jaar eerder brak in juni 1950 de oorlog uit in Korea. Ter gelegenheid van de herdenkinghiervan schreef Jacob de Haan deze compositie. In deze fanfare verwerkte hij de melodie van Arirang, het populairste en bekendste volkslied van Korea. Het Korea Festival Wind Orchestra verzorgde in Seoel de première tijdenshet festival onder leiding van Jacob de Haan zelf.

Fanfare for Korea wurde im Auftrag des 1. Koreanischen Internationalen Blasorchester-Festivals, das anlässlich des 60-jährigen Gedenkens an den Korea-Krieg stattfand, in Auftrag gegeben. Jacob de Haan verarbeitete in seinem Werk die Melodie von Arirang, dem beliebtesten und bekanntesten Volkslied Koreas. Das Korea Festival Orchestra sorgte während des Festivals in Seoul für die Uraufführung unter der Leitung von Jacob de Haan. Beim Abschlusskonzert in der Kriegs-Gedenkstätte wurde das Werk vom Asian Wind Orchestra unter der Leitung von Dennis Johnson gespielt.

Jacob de Haan a choisi de b tir son oeuvre autour de l’air d’Arirang, la plus connue et la plus appréciée des mélodies coréennes traditionnelles. John Blanken composed his traditional style concert march Liberty was composed in 2004. The first performance took place during a concert in which the theme was the struggle for independence and during the concert the audience sang the song of independence from large banners situated on both sides of the both. This grandiose yet lyrical march will open your concert in a truly liberating manner.

Liberty is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm. Het eerste deel bevat naast een beweeglijk thema een aansprekende bassolo. Na de bassolo komt het eerste thema weer naar voren en wordt, na een krachtige afsluiting, hettrio ingeleid. Een lange, lyrische melodie in de tenorgroep laat vervolgens het publiek even achteroverleunen en genieten. Ze wordt echter bruusk onderbroken door een wilde fortissimopassage, gekenmerkt door een lange toonladderdie door het hele orkest heen loopt. Deze mondt uit in een welluidend Grandioso met een herhaling van de lyrische melodie, omspeeld in de discant, waarmee Liberty besluit.

Liberty ist ein kontrastreicher Konzertmarsch in traditioneller Form. Der erste Teil enthält neben einem lebhaften Thema ein anspruchsvolles Bassolo. Das ausgedehnte lyrische Trio enthält fast komplett neues thematisches Material und bildet so einen interessanten Gegensatz zum ersten Teil. Ein weiterer Kontrast entsteht durch eine abrupt einsetzende, wilde Fortissimo-Passage, die durch das ganze Blasorchester gereicht wird, bevor ein reizvolles Grandioso den Marsch beendet.

Liberty est une marche contrastante de forme traditionnelle. La première partie développe un thème pétillant qui se fond dans un solo de basse solidement charpenté. Le trio, plus lyrique, expose quelques nouvelles idées formant un contraste marqué avec le passage d’ouverture. La musique s’enflamme pour un énoncé en fortissimo qui chemine travers l’ensemble de l’orchestre puis cède sa place un thème Grandioso, dernier épisode de l’œuvre.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr Blasorchester überzeugen wird!

Welcome to Ireland, the country where the traditional music is as varied as the landscape! Marc Jeanbourquinâ??s Irish Fantasy starts in a carefree and lively fashion from County Galway, then strolls through the moorlands of Kerry in a slower, lyrical movement with room for a solo, and comes to rest in Cork, with high-spirited and up-tempo folk tunes, and an accompaniment reminiscent of the bagpipes.

Ierland heeft - naast een veelvoud aan prachtige landschappen - een rijke muzikale traditie. In dit werk verwerkte de componist beide elementen en steekt van wal met een indruk van het opgewekte County Galway om dan door de venen van Kerry te wandelen, begeleid door een langzame optionele solo voor trombone en trompet. In Cork mag de doedelzak natuurlijk niet ontbreken en breekt een heus dansfeest los met de typische Ierse folkmuziek!

This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune ‘Holy, holy, holy!’ will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and concert band. It is in the traditional air varié form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes’ especially for Reginald Heber’s renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

L’hymne connaît un succès universel dès sa publication dans le psautier Hymns Ancient and Modern en 1861. Philip Sparke a repris cette célèbre mélodie pour composer Variants on an English Hymn Tune qui se présente sous la forme traditionnelle d’un air varié dont la structure comporte une introduction, un thème et une suite de trois variations sur le thème.

The First Nowell is a traditional Christmas song that can be traced back to the 18th century. The word â??nowellâ? is in fact derived the French word for Christmas, â??noelâ?. The First Nowell is sung in Englishspeaking countries around the world, although the actual text may vary by region and local customs. The simple and beautiful melody has made this carol a Christmas favourite. Lorenzo Bocci turns the melody into an elegant flexible four-part arrangement.

The First Nowell is een traditioneel kerstlied dat vermoedelijk uit het Cornwall (Engeland) van de achttiende eeuw stamt. Het woord â??Nowellâ?? in de titel verwijst naar het Franse woord voor kerst: noël. In heel het Engelstalige gebiedwordt dit lied gezongen, weliswaar met verschillenden teksten. Dankzij de eenvoudige maar ontroerende melodie is het lied over de gehele wereld bekend. Lorenzo Bocci maakte er een arrangement voor vijfstemmige variabele bezettingvan. Lieflijk en hartverwarmendâ?¦

Kentish Dances is een suite op basis van dansen uit het Engelse graafschap Kent. Dit graafschap heeft zijn eigen dansmelodieën, wat in Engeland bekend is geworden als ‘country dancing’. Deze danswijsjes waren de bron van ditdriedelige werk van Philip Sparke, waarin levendige en opgewekte melodieën worden afgewisseld door melancholische en zangerige passages. Een betoverend werk!

Wie der Titel schon andeutet, besteht Kentish Dances aus traditionellen Tanzmelodien aus der englischen Grafschaft Kent. Die seit dem 17. Jahrhundert beliebten Volkstänze sind zahlreich überliefert und boten Philip Sparke eine reichhaltige Quelle für dieses dreisätzige Werk, in dem sich lebhafte und beschwingte Melodien, mit melancholischeren Weisen und lieblichen Passagen abwechseln. Bezaubernd!

Kentish Dances (“Danses du Kent”) est une commande du Bromley Youth Music Trust pour le Bromley Youth Concert Band (Orchestre d’Harmonie Junior de Bromley) placé sous la direction de Michael Purton. L’œuvre a été donnée en création par la formation dédicataire, le 16 mars 2008 au St John’s, Smith Square Londres.La ville de Bromley est située dans le comté du Kent l’extrémité sud-est de l’Angletrerre. Le Kent possède un riche patrimoine culturel traditionnel et notamment de nombreux airs de danses comme beaucoup d’autres régions anglaises. Connue en Angleterre sous le nom de country dancing, la contredanse fut plébiscitée par les classes moyenne et aiséeanglaises la période élisabéthaine, supplantant les formelles gaillardes et pavanes en vigueur la cour royale. La contredanse connut une telle notoriété que de nombreux ouvrages lui furent consacrés tels que l’English Dancing Master de Thomas Playford, publié en 1651, qui constitue la plus importante source de mélodies de danses traditionnelles léguée la postérité.Michael Purton, Directeur du Bromley Youth Music Trust, suggèra l’idée d’une œuvre basée sur des airs de danses typiques du Kent. Philip Sparke accepta et composa cette suite de danses en trois mouvements. Le premier mouvement est construit sur un moto perpetuo qui développe deux mélodies pétillantes en 6/8 : Dover Castle et The Fair Maid of Wickham. Le mouvement central s’articule autour de l’air Blackheath dont la sombre mélodie contraste de façon charmante et opportune avec la mélodie Bromley Bells. Le finale expose les sémillants We Are All Right at Canterbury et Ramsgate Pier. La valse cadencée Northdown Waltz offre un délicieux contraste expressif.
