Franz Joseph Haydn's famous melody from the second movement of his “Emperor Quartet†(String Quartet, Op. 76) was the basis for the national anthem of Austria for more than a century and is frequently heard in hymns, anthems and alma maters worldwide. In this celebratory extended fanfare, composer James Curnow skillfully weaves this majestic melody into a work which is both exuberant and energetic. Recorded by the Cobb Wind Symphony (Marietta, GA) – Alfred Watkins and Robert Cowles conductors, premiered during their performance at the Midwest Clinic, December 2018. Dur: 4:25.

This delightful little miniature is an arrangement of Ravel's short minuet for piano written in homage to Classical era composer, Joseph Haydn. It was composed in 1909 and published a year later in 1910. Ravel based the raw material for this minuet on the notes whose letter names are the musical equivalents of Haydn's name.

Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) Concerto for Cello in C, Hob. VIIb: 1 is a rare instance where a masterpiece was lost, in this case for almost 200 years, before being rediscovered. The manuscript was discovered by Oldrich Pulkert at the Czech National Library in Prague among the Radenín Castle collection. Composed between 1761 and 1765 for his longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist in the Esterházy Orchestra. As the refinements of the Classical concerto were yet to be established by Mozart, this concerto reflects the Baroque ritornello form. This edition is completed by Oldrich Pulkert and Karel olc, with the solo cello part being edited by Milo Sádlo, who also gave the 20th century premiere of the work. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Cello.

Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set).

This thoughtful adaptation from Haydn's Creation is a wonderful way to incorporate classical music on your next program while working on balance between woodwinds, brass and percussion. It can also function as a lyrical work on your program without the demands of long sustained phrases. Easy to put together, yet still authentic to the original.

Cellist and composer David Popper published the CELLO CONCERTO No. 5 in C major, Hob. VIIb:5, in 1899 as a completion of stetches supposedly made by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Due to more recent scholarship, the work is now believed to have been written by Popper himself. A blend of technical exploration and melodic charm, the concerto has become a familiar staple of the cello repertoire. It consists of three movements: 1. Allegro moderato, 2. Andante, and 3. Allegretto vivace. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Cello.

This lively little melody started out as music for Roxelana, a girl in a 1777 play, became popular as a piano solo, and then became the second movement of Haydn's Symphony No. 63. Mr. La Plante remembered the piece from his piano lessons when he was in junior high school, and he has created this delightful transcription for band or wind ensemble. Classic!
