This hip pop chart features a catchy melody and contemporary harmonies. If you recognize a strong influence from the great music of Sting, you are on the right track. A great contrast to your more traditional charts. Includes an open solo section (written solos provided).

First released in 1954, this setting of the 19th-century folk song popularized by Glenn Miller in 1939 begins with an 8-bar marcato intro before settling into the familiar swing groove. The thematic build is gradual and dramatic -- saxes alone, then saxes with trombones, then saxes, trombones and trumpets together -- and the finishing shout is loud and strong. All rhythm section parts are fully notated, brass ranges are very accessible, and no improvisation is required. Duration 2:05.

A Latin-pop original, that's kind of funky, targeted at the skilled high school level. It's played around 176 BPM with lead trumpet range to written high C. Sample solos are provided for all instruments and the Latin percussion part includes bongos, congas, cowbell, and shaker. Optional vibes, flute, F horn, and tuba. It's very hip!

A high energy Latin pop groove, this one moves along at a pretty good clip---around 240 BPM. It features a soprano sax lead instead of alto 1 and solo space for all saxes, trumpet 4, and trombones 1 and 2. The lead trumpet range is to written high F. A hot sax section soli and some counterpoint round out this cannonball. Hot stuff! (6:28) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

As recorded in 1972 by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on their album Suite For Pops, this solo feature for scat vocalist or guitar opens with a big, full-band intro in slow swing before the 'funky 4 feel' takes over. Punctuated by screaming brass parts, ad lib solo fills by trumpet and tenor, and an optional solo cadenza before the final chord, this tribute to Louis 'Pops' Armstrong is intended for experienced bands only. Duration 11:30.
