Duration 55 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 54.838/19. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5483819). ISBN 9790007133696. Key: B flat major. Language: Latin. The Requiem in B flat major is Johann Michael Haydn's second setting of the liturgical text of the Mass of the dead (another Requiem, MH 599, has since been identified as the work of Father Georg Pasterwiz) and it is also his last work, his Opus ultimum. On commission from Empress Maria Theresia he began the composition in 1805, but due to a serious illness he made only slow progress with the work. Like W. A. Mozart, he could not complete this Requiem. In 1839 Father Gunther Kronecker, Benedictine Father in the monastery of Kremsmunster in Upper Austria, completed the torso in the spirit and style of Haydn. During his student days in Vienna Father Gunther belonged to the circle of friends who were associated with Franz Schubert. Solo voices, Coro SSATTB, orchestra - Grade 3 SKU: CA.4066103 Kyrie in G minor and Gloria in G major. Composed by Antonio Lotti. Vocal score. Duration 32 minutes. Carus Verlag #4066103. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4066103). ISBN 9790007311896. Key: G minor / g major. Latin. Antonio Lotti was employed at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice for almost his entire life. In 1717, however, he was lured for two years to Dresden by the Saxon court as a composer of operas. A score of his Kyrie in G minor and his Gloria in G major, combined under the title Missa Sapientia, was later found amongst the personal belongings of Dresden court composer Jan Dismas Zelenka.
Zelenka was not the only one person impressed by the Mass: at least two other illustrious composers had copies made, namely Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Indeed, the Mass is a magnificent piece, following the concertante style of the time, with a brilliant yet warm string sound (2 violins and 2 violas). Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5454605). ISBN 9790007109875. Language: Latin. Among Haydn's over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg church trio includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of Missa solemnis. The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history of the origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. Secondly the political situation, with the imminent invasion of Austria by Napoleon's troops, had reached a crisis point which is reflected in the description of this composition as a Mass in time of war. Last but not least, this work is the first of the group of six settings of the Latin Mass which, together with the oratorios The Creation and The Seasons, form the body of Haydn's last period vocal works, and which unquestionably belong among his supreme creative achievements. Orchestra SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 clarinos/trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, basso continuo, [2 oboes, 3 trombones] - Grade 3 SKU: CA.4062705 Spaur Mass. Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Edited by Bernhard Janz. Arranged by Volker Blumenthaler. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Mozart. German title: Missa In C Kv 258 (Spaur-Messe) Rev.2003. Sacred vocal music, Masses, Latin. Choral Score. Composed circa 1775-1777. KV 258. 16 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 40.627/05. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4062705). ISBN 9790007084684. Key: C major. Language: Latin. The relatively unspectacular nature of the Spaur Mass may be one of the reasons for the fact that writers on music generally refer to it only as a peripheral work, a little sister of Mozart's important church works. With regard to scoring, the Spaur Mass belongs to the category of the missa solemnis, but its brevity and its stylistic character belong far more to the missa brevis. Unlike the Organ Solo Mass KV 259, here the soloistic element - both instrumental and vocal - is clearly integrated to the background in favour of the development of the whole ensemble.
